Questions & Answers
Dachshunds are a breed of small, yet loyal and brave dogs that are often considered brave for their size. They make excellent pets as they are friendly and social animals, and get along well with kids and families. They are active, and love mentally stimulating activities like playing hide and seek or frisbee. Dachshunds have short coats and come in various colors, such as black, brown, cream, or red. Training a Dachshund is important, as they have a tendency to bark and dig if left unsupervised.
While there is no such thing as a hypoallergenic dog, the myth that Dachshunds are hypoallergenic is circumstantial. Dachshunds sometimes fare better than other breeds when in the presence of those with allergies, however that in no way guarantees that a person with allergies will remain symptom-free when in the presence of a Dachshund. It's important to understand that different allergies may result in different responses to the same breed of dog. All individuals should seek medical advice prior to bringing any pet into the home.
Dachshunds should never be fed human-grade meats and dairy, raw meat, raw eggs, alcohol, chocolate, caffeine, xylitol, oily or fatty foods, grapes, raisins, corn cobs, onions, garlic, chives, nuts or nut butters, fruits with pits or seeds, and raw sprouts. Additionally, anything that can be a choking hazard should be avoided. Foods that are high in sugar and fat should also be avoided as they can lead to unhealthy weight gain and dental issues.
To become the best puppy parent for your Dachshund, there are several steps you should take. Start by understanding and researching the specific breed's needs and temperament Dachshunds are loyal and loving, but they require special care. Training is key, so be sure to set boundaries and reinforce positive behaviors. Provide plenty of exercise and make sure to give your pup access to a safe, secure outdoor space. Lastly, be sure to provide proper nutrition, ample veterinary care, and lots of love and patience.
Dachshunds come in two sizes, standard and miniature. Standard Dachshunds are generally 16-32 lbs and are around 8-9 inches tall measured from the shoulders to the ground. Miniature Dachshunds weigh an average of 11 lbs and typically reach heights of 5-6 inches above the shoulders. An interesting fact is that the standard and miniature Dachshunds have the same basic conformation and look like smaller versions of the standard Dachshunds.
Dachshunds require a moderate amount of exercise; much less than a larger breed of dog, but more than a smaller dog. Generally speaking, at least one 30-minute walk every day is ideal for a Dachshund. Doing this or more should be sufficient for healthy activity. If you can offer your dachshund additional white-knuckle play opportunities such as agility or fetch, it will mentally and physically stimulate him even more. When playing, always ensure that your dog is supervised, since dachshunds have a high prey drive.
Dachshunds can make wonderful family dogs with the right owner! These clever, loyal, and affectionate dogs come in two varieties: smooth-haired and wire-haired. Both varieties are independent thinkers, but they love spending time with their families. They aren’t likely to wander off and make excellent watchdogs without becoming too yappy. Dachshunds are strong-willed and require firm, consistent training for optimal obedience. Plus, they have low exercise needs, making them great for apartment living.
Training a Dachshund is much like training any other breed of dog; it all depends on the dog and the person providing the training. Patience is key when it comes to training a Dachshund; when they sense they are in control, they will often become uncooperative. Having consistency is critical when training; any new behaviors should be reinforced with positive reinforcement and treats while negative behaviors should be discouraged and corrected immediately. Most Dachshunds respond well to positive reinforcement as they are especially food motivated.
