Questions & Answers
Dachshunds are unique in that they belong to the hound family, the most ancient and venerated group of canine companions. Traditionally they have been used to hunt small to mid-size game, particularly burrowing animals like rabbits. Because of their long, low bodies, Dachshunds can dig easily and move quickly through tunnels. Dachshunds come in a variety of sizes ranging from miniature to standard. Additionally, short-hair and long-hair varieties are available, although most Dachshunds have wire-hair.
Dachshunds are not non-shedding dogs. As with many kinds of dogs, Dachshunds can shed their old fur throughout the year. However, they are considered a low-shedding breed which means their fur does not come off in large amounts like some other breeds. Dachshunds usually shed minimally throughout the year with periodic heavier shedding periods, especially during spring due to their thick double coat which they shed out twice each year. Grooming and regular brushing can help to reduce the amount of loose fur the breed sheds even further.
Dachshunds should not be fed anything that is high in fat, such as bacon, sausage, or greasy processed snacks. They should also avoid any foods that are acidic, like citrus fruits, tomatoes, and vinegar-based dressings. Whole grains, such as oats and brown rice, should be used 'infrequently' in their diet, although grains can be used to supplement a balanced diet. Dachshunds should also avoid chocolate, onions, garlic, and grapes all of which can be toxic for them.
Preparing your home for a new Dachshund starts with understanding the dog's needs and setting up your living space to best suit them. Make sure to create a safe environment for your companion by checking your home for hazards and securing any items that could become a choking or strangulation hazard. Purchase a crate for puppy training and set up an area where your pup can exercise and play. Provide your pup with a cozy bed and plenty of toys suitable for a small breed.
Dachshunds vary in size depending on the type and breed. The standard size measures between 8 and 9 inches tall at the shoulder and can weigh anywhere from 16 to 32 pounds. The miniature Dachshunds range in size from 5 to 6 inches tall and can weigh between 8 and 11 pounds. The miniaturized version of the Dachshunds are the "Tweenies", which are slightly bigger than the miniature variety and usually measure between 8 and 9 inches tall and can weigh between 11 and 14 pounds.
Dachshunds are a lively breed that need daily exercise for their physical and mental health. Exercise should include plenty of activity such as walks or games that can provide a stimulating challenge. Generally, Dachshunds should receive at least 30 minutes of dedicated exercise each day ideally split into two or more sessions. Longer periods of exercise or more challenging activities such as agility training can also be beneficial. Additionally, it is beneficial for their mental wellbeing to have access to a large, secure outdoor area where they can explore and play.
Dachshunds are definitely good family dogs they're loyal, loving, and usually have even temperaments. They are great watch dogs and alert owners when someone is at the door. They're also very intelligent, and easy to train when it comes to house rules and commands. Dachshunds enjoy spending time with their human family, and can get lonely if left alone for too long. They thrive when they can join in family activities, and can be wonderful companions on walks and trips.
Training a Dachshund requires consistent, positive reinforcement. Start early and include basic obedience commands, such as sit, stay, come, and leave it. Positive reinforcement can be in the form of treats, praise, and play. Consistency is key when teaching dogs commands. Inconsistent responses can lead to confusion and frustration. Remember to start with short, basic commands and gradually work up to more complex commands and longer duration. Additionally, provide plenty of physical and mental stimulation, which can include fun activities like playing fetch or taking them for a walk.
