Questions & Answers
Dachshunds are classified as a hound dog breed. They were originally bred to be hunting dogs, known for their courageousness, strong sense of smell, and ability to burrow underground. Their long, narrow body shape equips them to do their breed-specific job, and makes them ideal for going into small spaces and chasing after prey. Their stubby legs are stout and powerful and keep them moving quickly and efficiently. Dachshunds come in three sizes: standard, miniature, and kaninchen.
No, Dachshunds are not considered a non-shedding breed. Though their coat is usually short and smooth, they can still shed some hair. However, their shedding is generally less than what is seen in some other dog breeds. If you are looking for a dog that does not shed much at all, you may want to consider a breed like a Portuguese Water Dog, Standard Poodle or Portuguese Podengo Pequeno.
It is generally recommended that you should avoid feeding Dachshunds anything that has a lot of fat or sugar content. This includes items such as bacon, sausage, hot dogs, candy, cake, chips, ice cream and table scraps. Foods high in fat can lead to serious health issues because they can cause pancreatitis in Dachshunds. You should also steer clear of anything that contains chocolate, onions, grapes, or raisins as these could be toxic to your pup.
To prepare your home for your new Dachshund, begin by buying food and water bowls that are safe for your pup. If you plan to crate train, also get a crate that gives your pup sufficient space to turn around and stand up. Never leave your dog unattended in his crate for extended periods of time. Make sure to secure any electrical cords and items that could pose as a choking hazard. Set up a designated potty area, then stick to it.
While Dachshunds may be considered small to medium-sized on average, the size of an individual Dachshund can vary greatly. Some Dachshunds can weigh as much as 20-30 pounds, which could potentially put them in the same weight range as small to medium-sized dogs. Overall, Dachshunds may not be as large as some other breeds, but they can be considered big dogs when compared to other toy breeds. Dachshunds are extremely adaptable and can make great family pets regardless of their size.
An ideal amount of exercise for a Dachshund is around 30-45 minutes a day. This should be done in two smaller 10-15 minute sessions taken twice a day to ensure your pup is getting sufficient exercise for its breed. The walks should be more than just a stroll around the block try mixing in excitement with fetching and activities such as agility training that put a spin on walking your pup. In addition to giving your pup the physical activity they need, it's just as important to give your pup the mental stimulation they need.
Dachshunds can make wonderful family pets. They are loyal and devoted, and their small size means they blend well into many family settings. Despite their small size, Dachshunds possess a bold, spirited temperament and can make excellent watchdogs for homes. They don’t need a great deal of exercise, because they can remain active and playful indoors with their family. Dachshunds are also social, friendly, and curious, so when properly socialized, they can get along beautifully with children, other pets, and strangers.
Dachshunds are known for their intelligence and their ability to be trained, making them an appealing breed for many prospective pet owners. They have terrific problem-solving skills and perform well in agility classes, including obedience and other activities that require focus and concentration. Dachshunds are quick to pick up on commands and learn from their experiences, and they're also quite social, forming a quick bond with new people. Their high intelligence and intense loyalty make them ideal companions and can make them a joy to own.
