Questions & Answers
A Dachshund is a type of long-bodied, short-legged breed of dog that hails from Germany. Known for their bravery and loyalty to their owners, these dogs are usually recognizable by their long pointed snout, droopy ears, and blueish-gray eyes. They typically have a short, double layer coat that can be either smooth or long-haired. Although they typically weigh between 16 and 32 pounds, they are surprisingly brave and are known for their love of digging.
One of the best ways to manage allergies when living with Dachshunds is to ensure your home and the dog's environment is well maintained. Regular vacuuming and dusting are key steps, as is bathing them weekly with a hypoallergenic shampoo. You may also want to use an air filter to reduce airborne allergens. Additionally, keep the pet's fur trimmed or clipped short as much as possible. Lastly, grooming them outdoors can help prevent dust and dander from being spread inside the home.
Dachshunds should not be fed bones, as these can splinter and cause internal damage or digestive obstruction. Foods such as chocolate, onions, grapes, and raisins can be toxic to Dachshunds. Very spicy foods, as well as processed foods with too much sugar and/or salt, should also be avoided. Fat trimmings from meats, uncooked eggs, and raw dough can also cause digestive issues for Dachshunds.
Before bringing your new Dachshund home, make sure your home is ready for its arrival. Create an area in your house where they can feel comfortable. Provide a bed or cushion, food and water bowls, and toys for your puppy. Ensure that the area is safe and secure, with no electric cords, breakable objects or potential hazards. Consider childproofing the area, if possible. Make sure you have all the necessary supplies before picking up your new pet and create an effective routine for feeding, exercise and house training. Professional training and supplements may be helpful too.
The size of your Dachshund puppy will depend on its particular breed and lineage. Generally, the standard size of an adult Dachshund will range from eight to nine inches in height, with body lengths ranging from eight to twelve inches. Depending on the breed, some Dachshunds can reach sizes greater than standard. Miniature Dachshunds tend to be smaller than standard Dachshunds, reaching heights of five to six inches, and body lengths of eight to ten inches.
It depends on the age and health condition of your Dachshund. For adult, healthy Dachshunds, a good rule of thumb is to walk them for at least 30 minutes a day. However, puppies require more exercise and may need up to an hour of daily walks. On the other hand, elderly or unhealthy Dachshunds should usually go for shorter walks of around 10-15 minutes on a daily basis. In addition to walking, it's important to also give your Dachshund plenty of opportunities to be active within your home or back yard.
Many Dachshunds do get along with other pets if properly introduced and socialized. Dachshunds are loyal to their owners and love to show attention to them. This breed is also quite independent and can be aloof when it comes to other animals. For this reason, it is important that a Dachshund is properly socialized from a young age. They should be exposed to other dogs, cats, and animals, in order to get used to them in a safe environment.
Dachshunds can be quite intelligent and have been known to learn very quickly with the right teaching and guidance. They can understand commands, routine behaviors, and even chain their commands together. They have a good ability to problem solve and are eager to please, making them very easy to train with consistency. Dachshunds are also highly observant, and they can adjust quickly to new people, animals, and environments. This makes them wonderful family pets, eager to explore and ready to join in on family adventures.
