Questions & Answers
Dachshunds are an incredibly unique breed of dog that stands out for their long, low bodies and their bold personalities. While most dogs are bred for specific tasks like hunting and herding, Dachshunds were bred to be small, fearless, and persistent enough to pursue burrowing animals like badgers. That same determination and independence that makes them so hard to train as household pets, also makes them interesting. Despite their small size, they have no problem asserting themselves with other pets or humans.
The Dachshund is a small breed of dog that is known for its long body and short legs. Their coats come in a variety of colors and can be long-haired, short-haired, or wirehaired. Long-haired coats are smooth and silky, while short-haired coats are closer to the skin and can range from wavy to curly. Wirehaired coats are dense and harsh, and usually contain some type of undercoat. Dachshunds can also come in a variety of colors such as black, tan, gray, brindle, and sometimes even spotted.
Dachshunds primarily eat a high-quality dry dog food that is nutritionally balanced and specifically made for smaller breeds. It is recommended to feed your Dachshund two meals a day with an appropriate-sized portion for their size. Additionally, occasional treats can be used as rewards for good behavior but should be given in moderation to avoid obesity and other health issues. It's important to ensure fresh, clean water is accessible for them at all times. Dachshunds may also enjoy meals like cooked chicken, eggs, some cooked vegetables, and fruit.
Becoming the best puppy parent for your Dachshund starts with taking the time to understand the breed and its unique traits. Knowledge is key, so make sure to do your research to learn what type of nutrition, exercise and stimulation their little bodies need. You'll also need to set firm boundaries and training rules, all the while showing love and affection. This can be as simple as providing a comfortable, safe bed for them to sleep in, giving frequent positive reinforcement and providing adequate playtime.
Dachshunds can vary in size and, as such, can be classified as either a small or large dog. Ultimately, the size of the Dachshund will be determined by its specific breed. The Standard Dachshund, for example, typically weighs between 16 and 35 pounds, while the Miniature Dachshund typically weighs less than 11 pounds. Despite a Dachshund's size, however, they are considered big dogs in spirit.
Dachshunds have been known to enjoy swimming, although they should always be monitored closely when doing so. Usually, a Dachshund will enjoy swimming in a body of water that is not too deep and not too cold, as they don't have much body fat and could become hypothermic if the water is too cold. Additionally, they should swim in a place that is free of debris and pollutants that could potentially harm them. A life jacket is also recommended for some added support and safety.
Generally speaking, Dachshunds are usually friendly and sociable with children. However, like any breed, it is important to properly introduce and socialize a Dachshund around kids to ensure a positive experience for both the child and the dog. When done properly, Dachshunds and children can become lifelong companions and can happily enjoy each other's company. Supervision is necessary when they are together, of course, as with any dog breed and children due to the size difference between a Dachshund and small children.
The amount of minutes allocated to training your Dachshunds may vary depending on how often you'd like to train. As a general guideline though, it would be a good idea to dedicate at least 10-15 minutes a day to training your Dachshunds. A longer and more intense session may be appropriate if the pup is a bit more difficult to train, or if he/she is very motivated for a good behavior. On the other hand, if your pup readily follows instructions or is rather young and energetic, shorter sessions of around 5-10 minutes intervals may suffice.
