Questions & Answers
Dachshunds have a storied history and there are many fun facts about them. They originated in Germany in the 1600s as a way for hunters to track badgers and other burrowing animals. They were later bred to be lap dogs, and are now known as a loyal and playful breed. There is actually a larger variety of Dachshunds than is commonly known; they come in three different sizes (standard, miniature, and kaninchen) and two coat types (smooth or wire haired).
Dachshunds can be described as low-shedding dogs, which means they do not require as much grooming as other breeds, such as a German Shepherd or Husky. While their fur does not come out as much, they still have an undercoat that needs to be brushed regularly to prevent mats or tangles. Dachshunds do have a tendency to lose more fur during times of shedding, usually between the spring and summer seasons. However, with the proper grooming and a good diet, their fur can stay healthy and shiny all year long!
Dachshunds, like any other dog breed, should not be fed anything that is not labeled as a dog food. Specific items to avoid when feeding a Dachshund include sugary treats, such as chocolate, grapes, and raisins; fatty foods, like hamburger, bacon, or sausage; onions, garlic, and chives; food with a lot of salt or spices; bone or beef marrow; and anything with caffeine. Additionally, Dachshunds are prone to back problems and they should not be overfed, as this can cause further medical issues.
Before your beloved new Dachshund arrives, it's important to make sure your home is ready to provide a safe and secure environment. First, ensure that all hazardous materials such as cleaning products and medications are out of reach. Next, assess the home for possible escape routes around the perimeter, such as small openings or gaps under doors that your pup may be able to squeeze through. Additionally, check for any cords or electrical wires that might be chewed and present a danger.
Dachshunds, commonly referred to as "weenies" or "wiener dogs," generally don't fit the description of a "big" dog when compared to other breeds. They typically stand between 8 and 9 inches tall at the shoulder and weigh between 16 and 32 pounds. However, their small bodies often make them look bigger than they really are! Some people might consider these canines to be big, particularly when factoring in their long bodies, while others might disagree.
Yes, you can take your Dachshund running! This may be a great exercise for them depending on their health and energy levels. Keep in mind, however, that because Dachshunds have short legs, a long running session may quickly tire them out. To avoid fatigue, opt to set off on shorter and more frequent runs with your pup. As always, remember to bring ample water and pay close attention to their needs during and after your time jogging together.
Dachshunds can make wonderful family pets. They tend to get along very well with children and have a playful, spunky nature that kids just love. Although their small size makes them a little bit more fragile than other breeds, Dachshunds are very loyal and protective, often making them great watchdogs. With proper training and socialization, a Dachshund can learn to become a friendly, loyal companion for the whole family. Of course, this should all be done with the supervision of adults for safety.
Dachshunds are certainly considered intelligent dogs, due in part to their sharp sense of smell, eagerness to learn, and playful nature. They are often incredibly loyal and affectionate with their favorite humans, showing understanding for their commands, most notably when it comes to house training and behavior modification. In addition, Dachshunds can quickly connect their name with their purpose, and they are also quite adept at problem solving. That being said, they are not considered one of the most obedient breeds, so patience and consistency are important when teaching your pup new commands.
