Dachshunds are a versatile, small-to-medium breed of dog that is classified as a hound. Highly intelligent, they are also characterized by their long body and short legs, with some variations that may include short-haired, long-haired or wire-haired coat types. Out of all hound breeds they are considered to be one of the most popular due in part to their lively and loyal personalities that make them ideal companion animals. They have a scrappy and independent nature that calls for firm and consistent training starting as puppies.
Dachshunds typically shed more than some other breeds, but they are still considered low-shedding compared to other dog breeds. Generally, Dachshunds have a single-layer short, smooth coat which means the shedding is usually minimal. As with all breeds, regular grooming and brushing can help to reduce shedding and keep the coat healthy and looking great. Dachshunds should not need to be bathed frequently, since their natural oils help to keep their coats and skin healthy.
