Dachshunds are classified as a hound breed, descended from ancient hunting dogs which were bred in Germany centuries ago. They are small, long-bodied dogs with short legs, giving them the well-known distinctive shape of the Dachshund breed. They can come in short-haired, long-haired, or wire-haired varieties, and their energetic and loyal nature makes them a popular choice among many dog owners. Depending on the AKC, Dachshunds can be either in the Hound or the Terrier group.
The Dachshund's coat is similar to that of other breeds in the hound family in that it is short-haired, but there are a few key differences. It has a soft, dense undercoat that comes in a variety of colors including red, black and tan, chocolate and tan, cream, and wildboar. Unlike many shorthaired breeds however, the Dachshund's coat is not overly greasy or oily, so it's easy to groom and maintain.
Dachshunds have some special dietary needs compared to other breeds of dogs. They need a diet that is high in protein in order to keep their coats looking healthy and shiny. It should also contain essential vitamins and minerals so that their body stays active and alert. It's also important to make sure that their diet contains enough fiber, as dachshunds can be prone to digestive issues. Dachshunds come in two different size categories: standard and miniature. Standard Dachshunds weigh between 16 and 32 pounds when full grown and measure between 8 and 9 inches from the shoulders to the feet. Miniature Dachshunds are smaller versions of the standard size, tipping the scales at 11 pounds or less when full grown and measuring between 5 and 6 inches from the shoulders to the feet. If your Dachshund is particularly active, they may need more than 30 minutes of exercise each day.
Dachshunds are known for being very loyal and getting along fine with other animals if introduced properly and given time to get accustomed to each other. Generally, Dachshunds do best when properly socialized and can even be good friends with cats, dogs, and other pets. However, cats and small pets can be a bit too tempting of a prey for some Dachshunds that have not been fully socialized.
