Questions & Answers
Dachshunds belong to the Hound group of the American Kennel Club (AKC). This group of dogs are bred to use their keen sense of smell to find, flush out, track, or chase game. These dogs possess an intensely loyal, brave, and determined disposition, which has earned them their nickname “Hot Dog”. Dachshunds come in standard and miniature sizes and two distinct coat types: longhair and smooth coat. They are highly adaptable, easy to train, and are great with children.
Generally speaking, it is unlikely that a Dachshund will cause you to have allergies due to their short coats and minimal shedding. That said, all dogs carry a potential risk of triggering allergies due to their saliva and dander. If you are especially sensitive to pet residue, it may be helpful to research hypoallergenic breeds like Poodles instead. Ultimately, no breed can provide an absolute guarantee against potential allergies, so err on the side of caution before committing to any breed of dog.
Dachshunds should not be fed anything that is not specifically recommended by a veterinarian, as not all foods are appropriate for these small dogs. Dehydrated or raw diets, including bones, can be dangerous for a Dachshund, as they are prone to digestive issues. Human table scraps are also a bad idea, as many contain seasonings or ingredients that can give a Dachshund an upset stomach or, worse, cause poisoning.
Preparing your home for a new Dachshund can be a rewarding process. Begin by setting up a comfortable area for your pup, providing a bed, water bowl, and toys. Make sure that your pup has access to all the necessary items and that the noise and smells in your home are not overwhelming for them. Crate training is also important for housebreaking and enforcing boundaries. Make sure that all of the items in your home are safe and non-toxic, as Dachshunds have sensitive stomachs and noses.
Dachshunds may be compact in size, but when considering their personality, they are definitely big dogs! Although they are smaller in stature than most breeds, these long-backed doggos have a huge heart and some serious enthusiasm for life. They are curious and energetic, and although they may lack the size popularly associated with large breeds, they certainly make up for it in personality.
The amount of exercise a Dachshund needs depends on a few factors such as age, size, temperament and health. Generally, these dogs need at least an hour of exercise per day ideally, off-leash walks or runs. They usually can enjoy activities like agility, lure coursing, and flyball, as well as playing fetch and chasing bubbles. It's important to keep in mind that exercise should never be excessive, as Dachshunds have a tendency to overexert themselves.
Generally, Dachshunds get along with kids very well. They are an excellent family pet as they are friendly, outgoing and have an eagerness to please. Dachshunds are a bundle of energy and love to play games with the kids and are often entertaining with their enthusiasm. They can be trusting with children, adapting to gentle handling, unlike some other breeds which may see children as a threat. To ensure a smooth relationship between kids and a Dachshund, it's essential to teach the children to be gentle, and to help to supervise their interactions.
The amount of time you need to spend training your Dachshunds on a daily basis can vary depending on the age and size of your dog. Generally, it's recommended that puppies and young Dachshunds receive at least 15 minutes of training per day. Older dogs may require slightly less training time, typically 10 minutes per day. However, the exact amount of time for each Dachshund will depend on their individual needs and abilities. It might be beneficial to break the training down into several short sessions throughout the day, especially for puppies and younger Dachshunds.
