Questions & Answers
Dachshunds are an incredibly interesting breed of dog and one of the most beloved across the globe. One of the most fascinating things about this loyal pup is their interesting and unique physical features. These dogs, also known as “hot dogs” for their elongated body shape, are usually just a few inches tall and have smaller legs than most other breeds of dog. So, if you are looking for a small yet larger-than-life pup, Dachshunds are the perfect choice! Additionally, these dogs are very intelligent and possess amazing problem-solving skills.
Dachshunds have a short, smooth coat that varies in colours ranging from cream, black, and tan to dapple. This breed has no undercoat, so they do not need to be groomed as regularly as some other breeds. They do require regular brushing to keep their coat healthy and free of mats. The coat is water-resistant and offers protection against extreme temperatures. Dachshunds thrive in moderate climates and don't need extra protection. They also don't need extra trips to the groomers, due to their low-maintenance coat.
Dachshunds are scavengers and opportunistic eaters, so their diet should be a balanced combination of various types of food. Generally speaking, Dachshunds should be fed a high-quality dry dog food formulated for small breeds. These kibbles should contain proteins, grains, fruits, vegetables, vitamins, minerals and fatty acids that are essential for healthy growth and development. Additionally, treats, raw meats and home-cooked meals can be included in their diets in small amounts.
Before getting a Dachshund, you should make sure you have essential items such as food and water dishes, food, treats, a comfortable bed, a doggy-safe grooming brush, and a good quality collar and leash. You should also invest in a good quality dog crate to help with toilet training and to give the Dachshund a safe place to rest when needed. Be sure to pick dog toys that will not splinter or crack, as Dachshunds tend to chew on things.
Dachshunds typically reach a shoulder height of between 8 to 9 inches, when measured from the top of their shoulder blade to the ground. They range in size from 11 to 32 pounds, though about 15 to 20 pounds is an average weight. It is important to note that Miniature Dachshunds can weigh up to 11 pounds, while the Standard breed can weigh up to 32 pounds. Due to their unique build, their total length may be up to twice that of their shoulder height, resulting in a body that is quite long and lanky.
While you can take your Dachshund running, it is important to be aware that this breed is not meant for long or intense periods of exercise. These dogs are better suited for short walks and leisurely strolls running for too long, or too often, can put strain on their delicate joints. If you do take your Dachshund running, make sure to monitor them for fatigue and to take plenty of breaks throughout your route. Keep the running gentle and be mindful of the temperatures this breed is not well suited to handle extreme hot or cold climates.
Generally yes, Dachshunds tend to get along very well with kids. That being said, like any other dog, Dachshunds should be properly socialized at a young age to ensure they are friendly with children. Additionally, children should know how to appropriately interact with animals so they remain calm and don't excite the dog too much. At the same time, parents should make sure Dachshunds feel secure and are not taken advantage of by children. With proper understanding, care, and supervision, Dachshunds can be a great companion for children.
Dachshunds are known to be quite smart and loyal companions. They typically exhibit a high level of intelligence that is comparable to other popular breeds such as Border Collies, Poodles, and German Shepherds. Despite their diminutive size, they are surprisingly capable problem solvers and are very eager to please their owners, making them a great choice for people looking for a smart and loyal pup. Dachshunds can learn to recognize and respond to commands and have a good aptitude for watching their owners and responding appropriately.
