Questions & Answers
Dachshunds are lively and playful dogs that are full of character. Developed in Germany, they are among the oldest breeds and come in two varieties, the wired-haired and smooth-haired Dachshunds. They are known for their long, slender bodies and short, stubby legs, which give them a unique appearance and make them a great choice for people wanting a small house pet. Despite their size, Dachshunds require a fair bit of exercise, and should be taken out for daily walks.
Dachshunds are not typically non-shedding breeds, though their fur is typically quite short and coarse. While they do not tend to shed as heavily as other breeds, periodic brushing is still recommended to remove dead hair and maintain their fur and skin. Dachshunds do naturally shed some, usually during the seasonal cycles throughout the year and it is important to keep your house greatly vacuumed in order to keep dust and husks from accumulating.
Dachshunds should not be fed chocolate, grapes, raisins, macadamia nuts, onions, garlic, chives, and hazards containing xylitol in the ingredients as all of these can result in serious health problems. Avocados, which can cause a sudden drop in blood pressure if ingested, is also not recommended. Fruits that are high in sugar content such as watermelon, banana and pineapple also are likely to cause problems for a dachshund, as can processed, high-sodium human foods.
Before getting a Dachshund, it's important to stock up on all the essentials needed to make them feel right at home. Start with food, treats, and dishes for their meals. Pick up a good quality bed, toys, and a chew-resistant leash and collar. Your pup will need grooming toolsa brush, slicker, combs, and nail clippersand basic care items like shampoo and ear cleaner. You'll also need a pooper scooper or pet friendly, disposable bags to clean up after them.
Dachshunds come in a variety of sizes, ranging from miniature to standard. The miniature size typically weighs up to 11 lbs, while the standard size can weigh up to 32 lbs. Some variations of the breed grow to be much larger. This size range offers dog owners the ability to find the perfect companion, regardless if they live in a small apartment or a sprawling countryside home. Dachshunds are unique due to their long, low body and short legs, making for an unforgettable look and an energetic companion.
Dachshunds have quite a bit of energy and need lots of exercise and activity. On average, these dogs need 1-2 hours of exercise a day in order to stay healthy. It's important to provide physical activities such as walks and play time, but also mental activities that stimulate a curious, alert mind. This breed does need a good amount of physical and mental stimulation to be content, satisfied, and happy. Without the proper amount of exercise, they can become frustrated and their overall health can suffer in the long run.
Generally speaking, Dachshunds can get along with kids very well. They are usually relatively laid-back with children, provided they are properly socialized and trained. Young children should be supervised when interacting with a Dachshund, as with any breed, but they can make great family pets. It's important to keep training consistent when introducing a Dachshund puppy to a family with young children, as consistency will help him learn boundaries; and with proper guidance, the bond between child and Dachshund can be a very strong one.
Training a Dachshund should be done everyday, but the length of time required varies depending on how old the pup is, the type of training you plan to do, and the pup's ability to learn. A general guideline is that puppies should be given 15-20 minutes of training per day, with older dogs requiring closer to 30 minutes per day. Regardless of their age, it's important to break up the training sessions into short and manageable blocks for best results.
