Dachshunds are members of the hound family and are often referred to as "sausage dogs" due to their long, slender bodies. Dachshunds were originally bred in Germany for the purpose of hunting small game such as badgers, rabbits, and other vermin. This breed is divided into three varieties depending on coat type: long-haired, short-haired, and wire-haired. They are also categorized by size into miniature dachshunds (under 11 lbs.) and standard dachshunds (over 11 lbs).
The Dachshund has a distinctive double coat that comes in a variety of colors and patterns. The outer coat is usually wiry and wirehaired and the undercoat is soft and thick. The coat is naturally low-shedding and needs brushing one to two times a month for upkeep. It takes a bit more attention during seasonal shedding periods, when regular brushing a couple of times each week should suffice. The length of the coat may range from short and long. Depending on the length, clipping may be required for shorter coats or trimming for longer coats.
Dachshunds, also known as "hotdog" or "sausage" dogs, are lively and inquisitive animals that generally require a special diet. An ideal diet for a Dachshund consists of high-quality hen or beef-based dry kibble. Since many Dachshunds can be prone to weight gain, high-protein and low-fat options are best. Supplementing dry kibble with canned food, vegetables, and fruits can help create a more nutritionally-complete diet.
To prepare your home for your new Dachshund, be sure to puppy-proof your space. However, some breeders may breed a larger, rarer size called a Kaninchen Dachshund, which is small enough to be classified as a toy dog.
Dachshunds can be active dogs, however, not all are highly active. This breed has a lot of endurance and loves exploring, chasing, and digging. They are also an alert and inquisitive breed, so they need plenty of mental stimulation. Due to their short stature, they are easily adaptable to small living spaces, although they still require regular exercise in the form of daily walks, playtime, and games like fetching.
