Questions & Answers
Dachshunds are in the Hound Group of breeds, according to the American Kennel Club (AKC). They were bred to be a hunting dog, with a penchant for badgers, rabbits and other small burrowing animals. Despite their short legs, Dachshunds are strong and courageous, making them wonderful companions and companionship dogs. Their intelligence also makes them easy to train and they are beloved by their owners for their loyal and playful nature. These lovable dogs come in three sizes: standard, miniature and Kaninchen (rabbit).
Although Dachshunds do not shed much dander, fur, or saliva, which can cause an allergic reaction, they are not considered hypoallergenic. They do, however, require regular brushing and grooming to decrease the amount of allergens present in their fur. Additionally, although Dachshunds typically don't have the same issues attributed to long-haired breeds, such as matting, dander can still accumulate. If you are an allergy sufferer, proper grooming is essential to manage your allergic reaction.
Dachshunds should never be given chocolate, grapes, raisins, or onions, since these foods are highly toxic and can cause serious illness. Additionally, they should avoid fatty foods, as these can cause pancreatitis. Dachshunds should also avoid rawhide, as this can get stuck in their digestive systems. They should also not be given anything that is raw or undercooked, as this can also cause health problems. Lastly, it is important to ensure that their diet is nutritionally balanced and includes the appropriate amounts of protein, calcium, vitamins, and minerals.
Dachshunds generally have special requirements for care. They have a tendency to be overweight, so they need regular exercise--the American Kennel Club recommends daily walks and other activities. It's also important to keep their nails trimmed and their ears clean and dry. Moreover, dachshunds may suffer from an intervertebral disc disease, which is why it's important to help them maintain a healthy, stable weight. Additionally, they are prone to spinal issues, so it's a good idea to discourage jumping from furniture or stairs.
Dachshunds come in two sizes or "variants" standard and miniature. The standard size weighs an average of 16-35 pounds and can reach 8 to 9 inches in height at the shoulder. The miniature variety is less than 11 pounds and 8 inches or less in height. Although the two sizes have the same long, curved bodies, the miniature variety is much smaller in stature than its standard counterpart. The miniature size is perfect for small living spaces in apartments or city homes, whilst the standard is often preferred for those who have a large backyard and live in the suburbs or countryside.
While it is true that all dogs love to play in the water and be around water, it's not always the case for Dachshunds. Some Dachshunds will take to swimming right away, while others may not feel comfortable. While the breed is not known for being avid swimmers, many Dachshunds enjoy playing in shallow water and will even venture into deeper water with proper guidance and encouragement.
Dachshunds can make wonderful companions for families with young children. Generally, these dogs exhibit a lot of energy and patience, especially when it comes to kids. They possess traits such as loyalty, love and protection that form great bonds with the whole family. Dachshunds are also known for their intelligence, attentiveness and trainability which make them well-suited to adapting to family life. However, they require a significant amount of exercise and attention. If given adequate exercise and training, Dachshunds are a great choice for families with children.
Dachshunds are an independent and clever breed of dog; this trait, combined with their robust personalities, means they are considered to be intelligent by many owners. They tend to instinctively remember details and commands due to their keen senses and impressive memory, although the difficulty of training them can vary significantly from one individual to another, and with the right training and motivation can learn many complex commands and tricks. Not only are they smart but they are also fun-loving and devoted companions.
