Questions & Answers
Dachshunds are a part of the hound group of dogs and are also commonly referred to as the "sausage dog", "hot dog", or even as the "wiener dog". Dachshunds have a long body and short legs, they may come in a variety of coat colors, patterns, and sizes. They are usually very loyal and devoted to their family and are generally friendly and good with children. However, they can be slightly territorial and have a stubborn streak and need to be properly trained and exercised.
While it's difficult to make any definitive predictions, it's generally unlikely that Dachshunds will cause allergies. That being said, there are certain circumstances that will affect the likelihood of an allergic reaction. It is important to be aware that all dogs may produce allergens, and that Dachshunds will likely be no exception. Consider the type of coat the dog has, as well as the environment in which it resides. For example, if a dog is usually kept outdoors, it may pick up more allergens, such as pollen, that could trigger an allergic reaction.
When selecting dog food for a Dachshund, it's important to consider their dietary needs. When choosing a brand, make sure the ingredients are high-quality and appropriate for the breed. Proteins should come from sources like chicken, lamb, beef, or eggs, and carbohydrates should come from wholesome grains like brown rice, oats, and barley. Omega fatty acids are important for maintaining a healthy coat and skin, so look for products that include sources like flaxseed and fish oil.
Before getting a Dachshund, it is essential to buy a collar and leash for training and walking, food and water bowls, grooming supplies like a flea comb, and comfortable bedding. Additionally, items such as a crate or kennel and dental products should be included in your list. It is also wise to purchase a toy or two for your puppy to play with, as well as some treats for when it does something good. Purchasing a few chew toys is also a good idea, as Dachshunds can be prone to destructive behaviors unless appropriately entertained.
Dachshunds come in two sizes: standard and miniature. Standard Dachshunds are typically 16-32 lbs and between 8-9 inches tall. Miniature Dachshunds are 11 lbs and less, and 5-6 inches tall. While there are no hard-and-fast rules, many breeders stop breeding miniature dogs once they reach 11-12 lbs. Knowing their adult size can be tricky because they are a deep-chested breed, so they may not appear adult size until around two years old.
Although many breeds of dog are known for their affinity for water, Dachshunds generally don't take to swimming. While they may be fine with getting their feet wet, Dachshunds may be lower energy dogs who do not seek out activities such as swimming. Additionally, since Dachshunds have longer spines than many other breeds, swimming can actually put them at risk for injuring their back due to the extension and contraction of their spines during swimming strokes. This doesn't mean that Dachshunds are adverse to all water activity, however.
Dachshunds can be great companions for kids, as they tend to be an affectionate and loyal breed. They are also quite energetic, and their small size makes them easy to handle. Dachshunds also tend to get along well with other animals, including other dogs, which can make them a great pick for households with young kids and pets. Although smaller dogs may not always be the best companions for young children, Dachshunds are known to have a friendly nature and can be very patient.
Training your Dachshund is an important step in establishing an effective relationship between you and your pup. Begin by choosing a consummate training environment that is free from distractions. Use positive reinforcement techniques such as praise or treats to reward desired behavior. Start with basic obedience commands such as "sit" and "stay" and gradually build up to more complex commands. It's important to provide consistent instructions with minimal repetition; this will help your pup understand your expectations and develop good behaviors. Timing is also essential; for instance, try to have your pup respond within seconds of issuing a command.
