Questions & Answers
A Dachshund is a small breed of dog originating in Germany in the early 19th century. They are also known as Sausage Dogs or Doxies due to their elongate bodies, short legs, and comically-long ears that give them an adorably comical appearance. Dachshunds can weigh between 16 and 32 pounds and stand between 8 and 9 inches tall. They are a hunting breed by nature, but their personality traits are mellower than other dogs.
Managing allergies with Dachshunds can be achieved in a few ways. Firstly, if it is possible, try to keep the area where the Dachshund spends the majority of their time free of excess allergens such as pollen and dust mites. Consider cleaning the environment such as carpets and furniture and vacuuming regularly. It may be helpful to maintain a separate bedroom for the Dachshund, so that allergens can be kept to a minimum. Additionally, use air purifiers to help filter out allergens in the environment.
Dachshunds are omnivores that enjoy a variety of food; they should eat a balanced diet of high-quality proteins, complex carbohydrates, fatty acids and micronutrients. Protein sources like cooked meats, eggs and fish, along with whole grains, fruits and vegetables, will provide the nutrients your Dachshund needs to stay healthy. Fats, oils and treats should be given in moderation. Commercial dry kibble or wet food specifically formulated for a Dachshund's size, age and activity level are the easiest and safest option.
Dachshunds have some specific needs that should be taken into consideration to ensure they are happy and healthy. They do well with some daily exercise, at least a half hour of walking or running per day, to stay fit and provide them with mental stimulation. As a breed, they can be prone to certain health problems, so regular veterinary check-ups and a balanced diet are important. Some Dachshunds may suffer from intervertebral disc disease, so they should be discouraged from jumping from heights.
Dachshunds come in three sizes standard, miniature, and kaninchen (or "rabbit-sized"). The standard size is considered "large" and they usually weigh between 16 and 32 pounds. Miniature Dachshunds usually weigh between 11 and 16 pounds. The Rabbit-sized Dachshunds are typically smaller than the miniature size, usually weighing between 8 and 11 pounds. Additionally, their coats may vary from long-haired, short-haired, to wire-haired.
Many Dachshunds really do enjoy swimming! Although some Dachshunds have their own reservations about getting in the water, these dogs were bred and initially used for hunting waterfowl, which indicates that many of them actually are quite comfortable swimming. In fact, with enough practice and patience, your Dachshund may come to love taking a dip in the pool or pond! It's important to use a life vest when introducing them to the water since they are typically quite clumsy swimmers.
Dachshunds can make wonderful companions for first-time owners. They are highly trainable and usually have an upbeat attitude. Dachshunds are loyal and intelligent, making them relatively easy to own and care for. Additionally, because of their short stature they require less exercise than other dogs, so they don't need a lot of space. As long as they are given plenty of attention, Dachshunds are very happy and suit the lifestyle of first-time owners.
Training a Dachshund can be a delightful but potentially challenging experience depending on the commitment level of the owner. Dachshunds can be eager learners but possess strong personalities and therefore require consistency, patience and positive reinforcement. Regular and consistent reinforcement of desired behaviors is typically the most successful in achieving desired outcomes. Dachshunds are capable of learning basic obedience commands such as ‘sit’, ‘down’, and ‘stay’ and even some more advanced commands like ‘spin’ or ‘jump through a hoop.
