Questions & Answers
Dachshunds were initially bred in Germany to hunt badgers and other burrowing animals. Although they are small in size, they are exceptionally brave and loyal. Dachshunds are also known for their protruding ears and long sausage-like bodies. Depending on the size and breed, they can weigh anywhere from 16lbs to 32lbs. Their characteristically short legs also allow them to fit into small and otherwise inaccessible places. In addition, their average lifespan is around 12-16 years.
Dachshunds are not considered hypoallergenic. Hypoallergenic dogs have been bred to reduce or eliminate the production of the proteins that cause allergic reactions in some people. Although Dachshunds do not typically trigger allergy symptoms, they do produce an allergen that may still cause reactions for some people. It's important to note that even within hypoallergenic breeds, no dog is 100% hypoallergenic, so sensitivities to dander and other allergens can still occur.
Dachshunds need a balanced diet that includes a variety of foods like commercial dog kibble, wet food, and a few medically vetted home-cooked meals. Protein should be the largest source of energy in their diet, and fats should be moderate, while carbohydrates should be kept at a minimum, but not totally eliminated. Dietary treats like fruits and vegetables should also be included in moderation. As with any new food being introduced to your pet, it's recommended you consult with your veterinarian to ensure that your Dachshund's diet is healthy and balanced.
First and foremost, make sure you have plenty of space, time and energy to devote to your new Dachshund. Doing some research on the breed is a great way to find out more about their specific characteristics and needs so that you can prepare your home accordingly. Have all of the necessary supplies handy, like a food bowl, water and food, toys, and a leash; and familiarize yourself with Dachshund training methods and basics. It's also important to find a local veterinarian and groomer that you trust for any necessary care, and to start building a relationship with them.
The size of your Dachshund puppy will depend on a few factors. To get the most accurate size, it's best to speak with the breeder about the puppy's parent history. Typically, a Dachshund puppy will reach its full size at 14 to 15 months of age, but could take longer for some individuals. On average, an adult Dachshund can range in size from 8 to 9 inches in shoulder height, and can weigh between 10 to 32 pounds. In general, males tend to be larger than females.
Dachshunds are an active breed of dog, eager to interact with their family and explore their surroundings. Though typically low to the ground and small in size, Dachshunds have a fearless, energetic nature that drives them to stay active for many hours. They require regular walks and playtime every day to prevent them from becoming bored and potentially destructive. Breeds such as the miniature dachshund and the dapple dachshund are particularly energetic and make great family pets for those looking for a friendly, active companion.
Dachshunds can make wonderful family pets when their owners take the time to train and socialize them early. When properly trained, Dachshunds can be gentle and friendly with children as well as with adults. They are highly intelligent and amusing dogs that can make great companions for children. It's important to ensure that your family's dachshund is properly trained and socialized to ensure that he or she is comfortable around children and understands the boundaries set by parents.
Dachshunds are known to be smart and highly trainable dogs. They have been compared to terriers in terms of intelligence and the ability to learn quickly. It is believed that the breed was specifically bred to possess characteristics that highly favor intelligence. Dachshunds are curious animals that possess problem-solving capabilities and are able to learn tricks with minimal repetition. They have been known to remember commands with impressive consistency, with some members of the breed picking up complex commands and tasks in a surprisingly short amount of time.
