Questions & Answers
Dachshunds are an incredibly interesting, distinctive type of dog breed, with some fascinating characteristics that make them stand out from other canines. Their small, long body is both unique and endearing, with short legs that allow them to maneuver into tight spaces if necessary. They are also known for their courage and determination, as they do not back down from a challenge, and will go out of their way to protect their owners from danger.
While Dachshunds are not considered a hypoallergenic breed, some people may have a low or no allergic reaction to them. In general, hypoallergenic breeds are considered those that have coats that produce minimal dander, which is the cause of most pet-related allergies. Dachshunds have a short, smooth, wiry double coat, and while they do shed, they will only trigger allergies in those who are very sensitive.
Dachshunds should not be fed any human food, especially anything with sugar or chocolate. Additionally, they should not eat foods like grapes, macadamia nuts, avocados, garlic, onions, or any other type of produce that is toxic to canines. Bones and other cooked foods, such as hot dogs, may also be harmful to Dachshunds, as they can lead to obstructions. Instead, a balanced diet of animal proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals should be provided.
Before getting a Dachshund, you'll need to make sure that you have all the necessary items for your pup's long-term health and happiness. Food and water bowls, a bed with quality bedding, a collar, a harness, and a leash are essential for your pet's everyday needs. You should also consider purchasing a muzzle, nail clippers, a toothbrush and toothpaste, a brush and grooming supplies, toys for your pup to play with, and a humane pet carrier to take Dachshunds places in comfort.
The size of your Dachshund puppy will depend on its genetics, but most standard Dachshunds will reach between 8-11 inches in height and weigh between 16-32 lbs as a full-grown adult. However, you can have custom bred Dachshunds that are larger or smaller than this size range. The actual size of your puppy will depend on its breed line and its diet should be tailored accordingly. Generally, a good rule of thumb is to feed a puppy proportionally to its size.
Dachshunds generally love water and have an affinity for swimming. While this breed is not specifically bred for water activities, many enjoy the opportunity to be near water or go for a dip. Some Dachshunds are better swimmers than others, depending on their confidence and the environment they're in. Before allowing a Dachshund to swim, you should check with your veterinarian about any health limitations due to their short legs and long backs. It's best to introduce swimming slowly and carefully, as to not overwhelm the pup.
Dachshunds can generally get along with other pets, however there are some important factors to consider when introducing them to your existing animals. Determining whether your Dachshund and other pets will get along depends upon the age of your Dachshund, how they've been socialized, and the personalities of the other animals. If a Dachshund has been well socialised and is paired with other animals at a young age, many owners find that they show good temperaments and behave well with other pets in the home.
Training a Dachshund is not necessarily easy, but it is an achievable goal with time and dedication. Depending on the individual temperament of your Dachshund, you may have different challenges and successes in the process. It helps to focus heavily on positive reinforcement and praise, rather than berating and punishing mistakes. Having a well-structured training plan that is tailored to the unique personality of your pup can make all the difference in the success of your coaching.
