Rooted in the early 17th century in Germany, they were originally bred to hunt and pursue small game and badgers. Over 400 years later, they remain a popular choice of pet and companion for families who enjoy their loyal and energetic temperament. A fun fact to consider is that Dachshunds are sometimes referred to as "Wiener Dogs" because of their elongated hotdog-like bodies.
Dachshunds are not hypoallergenic, however they are relatively low-shedding compared to other dog breeds. Allergy sufferers will likely be able to tolerate a dachshund's presence better than that of many other breeds. That being said, dachshunds have a thick, double-coat that needs frequent brushing and can still trigger an allergic reaction in some people.
Dachshunds are prone to certain health issues, and their diet should be chosen carefully to avoid any potential issues.
