Questions & Answers
A Dachshund is a breed of small hound dog that originated in Germany. The name comes from the German word for badger, or Dachs, because the breed of dog was originally bred to search and hunt badgers and other burrow-dwelling animals. They stand up to 8-9 inches tall and can come in a variety of colors and patterns including but not limited to dapple, red, cream, black and tan and brindle. They are often known for their long body and sausage-like shape.
It is possible that Dachshunds could cause you to have allergies, however this cannot be determined with certainty as people often have different sensitivities to different animals. Dachshunds produce dander, which is a common allergen, but some people have little to no reaction while others may have severe reactions. It is best to speak with your doctor before getting a Dachshund, to ensure you will not experience an allergic reaction. Additionally, having the dog groomed or bathed regularly can help reduce the amount of dander in the home.
Dachshunds are energetic and active pooches that require a nourishing food to ensure they have the necessary vitamins, minerals and energy they need to stay fit and healthy. A high quality, specially formulated dog food designed for Dachshunds is ideal. It should contain real animal proteins, like chicken, beef, or fish, as well as essential fatty acids, probiotics, and complex carbohydrates. Make sure the food you select does not contain any fillers or preservatives.
Before getting a Dachshund, you should make sure to purchase essentials that will make the transition seamless and comfortable for you and your new pup. This includes a crate with a comfortable bed, collar and leash, plenty of toys, high-quality food, puppy treats, stainless steel bowls, puppy shampoo and a brush for daily grooming, and a pooper scooper for your pup's waste. Additionally, if you plan to train your pup, you should invest in whistle, clicker, and/or target sticks, as well as books or classes to help teach your pet.
The size of your Dachshund puppy will depend on its breed and genetics. Generally speaking, standard Dachshunds weigh 16-32 pounds and are 8-9 inches tall at the shoulder, mini Dachshunds weigh 11 pounds or less and are 5-6 inches tall at the shoulder, and the relatively rarer Kaninchen Dachshunds weigh 8-11 pounds and are 6-7 inches tall at the shoulder.
Dachshunds can be great swimmers. Many Dachshunds enjoy water and paddling around, especially on hot days. Swimming can be very beneficial for your Dachshund's health, as it is a low impact physical activity that is good for your pet's joints. However, it is important to never leave a Dachshund unattended in the water and to look out for signs of fatigue or discomfort. Additionally, you should make sure that the body of water is safe, clean, and shallow enough for your pup to manage.
Dachshunds are a great breed for first-time owners as long as they understand how to care for them. While they may be small, they have plenty of energy and require plenty of exercise. They can make wonderful companions if handled properly and with the right amount of attention and care. Early socialization and regular physical and mental stimulation is important for Dachshunds and their owners. As they get used to their new environment, they can quickly become loyal and loving companions that you and your family will cherish for many years.
Dachshunds are certainly an intelligent breed of dog. With their playful and lively personalities, Dachshunds are known for being quick learners, able to pick up new commands and tricks with ease. They also display amazing problem solving capabilities, often finding creative ways to get themselves out of sticky situations. They have an uncanny ability to remember commands and routines, even after just hearing them once, and are known for being very devoted to their owners. On top of all that, they are known to be active and good natured, making them great family pets.
