Questions & Answers
Dachshunds may be small, but they're full of big facts! For starters, the name Dachshund comes from German and literally means "badger dog" which explains why they were bred to hunt down burrowing animals like badgers, rabbits, and foxes. Fun fact: they are also known for their long, low-slung bodies and short legs, which make them great for following their quarry into narrower spaces hunting.
The Dachshund coat is a short and smooth coat that is typically reddish-brown in color with darker markings along the back and short legs. They have a luxurious, shiny and sleek texture that is weather resistant to numerous climates and is easy to maintain. The coat has an inner layer of insulation to keep them warm and protect them from the elements. The Dachshunds possess an inner coat of fur and an outer coat of guard hairs that should be brushed regularly to prevent matting and preserving a healthy looking coat.
Dachshunds are semi-carnivorous and need a balanced diet of both protein and carbohydrate-rich foods. Generally, a high-quality dry dog food – either a commercial kibble or a homemade diet – is a good option. Protein sources may include lean beef, chicken, pork, fish, eggs, and cottage cheese, while carbohydrates may include rice, barley, oats, sweet potatoes, and other vegetables. They should also have access to fresh water at all times. It's important to remember that every dog is different and may have individual dietary needs.
The best way to become an excellent puppy parent for your Dachshund is to understand their needs. Give your pup plenty of attention, acquire knowledge about their breed, and learn about proper nutrition and exercise. Take your pup to socialize and become familiar with other people and pets. Spend quality time with them, train them using positive reinforcement methods, and provide lots of mental stimulation. Also, admire and reward their good behavior and be consistent with them, as this establishes a secure bond with your puppy.
Growing to a height of approximately 8-9 inches and a weight anywhere between 16-31 pounds, the size of your Dachshund puppy will rely heavily on the backgrounds of the parents. Alert and energetic, the Dachshund puppy is an endearing breed with a sturdy, robust build and big personality. With regular exercise, nutrition, and adequate care, your puppy will grow into its breed standard size in the next 15-18 months. After the age of 1 year, Dachshunds have usually reached their full size.
Dachshunds are generally considered to be good swimmers, though it's important to ensure that they have the proper support and acclimation prior to introducing them to water. Generally speaking, these dogs enjoy playing in water to some degree, and with some patience, and a little practice, Dachshunds can quickly become accustomed to swimming. It is best to start slowly and ensure they remain comfortable while in the water. Additionally, extra support should be given in more open water settings such as a pool or lake as it can be more difficult to keep them afloat.
Dachshunds can be social and friendly dogs who get along well with other animals they are introduced to properly and in a controlled manner. Generally, they are good with other pets they have grown up around, including cats, birds, and other small animals. It is important to supervise your Dachshund when they are around other animals though, as they have a hunting instinct that may cause them to act out of character and go after smaller animals. Proper training and socialization during puppyhood is key to helping Dachshunds learn to interact safely and happily with other animals.
Dachshunds are a highly intelligent breed of dog, often providing years of devoted companionship for their caretakers. The breed is known for their friendly energy, loyal demeanor, and trainability. Dachshunds excel at the obedience ring due to their eagerness to please their owners, and their obedience wins have earned them recognition as one of the world's top canine competitors. Dachshunds also thrive at agility, rally, and tracking events and are a popular choice for therapy and service dogs.
