Questions & Answers
A Dachshund is a small short-legged dog with a long body, originating in Germany. It is usually a quiet and courageous breed and comes in a variety of colors and coat patterns. It has a wide head, pointed muzzle, large ears and round, dark eyes. It has a sturdy, elongated body, relatively short limbs, and long spine, making it perfectly adapted for underground burrowing. It has a smooth gait and is strong enthusiast for walking and running.
Dachshunds can be low-shedding or non-shedding depending on the coat type. Long-haired Dachshunds are the most likely to shed, and their coats need regular brushing and trimming. Short-haired Dachshunds do not usually shed much, and the amount of hair loss is usually comparable to that of a short-haired dog breed. However, since Dachshunds have short coats, they do not need daily grooming as long-haired breeds do. The smooth-haired variety is the least likely to shed.
Dachshunds, also known as wiener dogs or sometimes just as 'doxies', are often described as fun-loving, friendly, and energetic. As with all breeds, it is important to provide them with a balanced and nutritious diet to ensure their health and well-being. Generally speaking, the most suitable food for a Dachshund should contain high-quality protein from sources such as beef, chicken, lamb, or fish to provide their active little bodies with the energy they need.
Dachshunds can be robust and healthy, but they do have specific requirements that should be met for optimal health and wellbeing. Like all dogs, they require regular exercise and mental stimulation, preferably daily. They should be kept inside during hot weather and during cold weather need appropriate clothing to keep them warm. Furthermore, they should visit the vet regularly for checkups and vaccinations, stick to a balanced and healthy diet, and be groomed as needed. Additionally, providing a safe environment to play and rest is very important, as are training and socialization sessions with an experienced trainer.
Dachshunds typically reach heights of 8-9 inches and weigh between 16-32 pounds when fully grown. These dogs come in two different sizes: standard and miniature. Standard Dachshunds are usually longer in body length and miniature Dachshunds are shorter and petite. Depending on the variety or mix of these two sizes, these dogs can become quite small or quite big. These breeds are known for their long body and short legs, which are an adaptation that helps them better hunt and chase their prey underground.
While some Dachshunds may be content to explore the shallow edges of a nearby pond or lake, the majority of them are not strong swimmers, due to their short legs and long backs. While it is possible to train a Dachshund to enter the water with practice and dedication, most owners will find that their pup prefers to stay on dry land. It is helpful to be aware of the Dachshund's limitations when it comes to deep water, and always be ready to act, in case they get into trouble and need to be plucked out.
Dachshunds are excellent family pets due to their loyal, easy-going nature and enthusiastic personalities. They make great watchdogs by sounding the alarm whenever newcomers come near, while still being friendly and affectionate towards their family. Dachshunds love attention and can be very playful, happily romping around with their people and other pets. They often have a good sense of humor and are quite goofy at times. Dachshunds will eagerly accompany their family on walks and runs, but they can tire quickly due to their small legs.
Dachshunds are definitely a very intelligent breed. They are a delightful combination of being active, spirited, and brave—yet affectionate and loyal. They are keenly sensitive to their owner’s moods, exhibiting alertness and an eagerness to please. They make excellent watchdogs, as they are quick to sound the alarm when they sense danger. With adequate training and exercise, they are highly obedient and quick to learn new skills. Their eagerness to please makes them especially suited for obedience and agility competitions.
