Questions & Answers
Dachshunds belong to the Hound Group of dogs, a classification which includes a variety of breeds from the Afghan Hound to the Norwegian Elkhound. Common characteristics of breeds in this group include curved skulls, long ears, long legs, and square muzzles, and all are keen scent-detectors. Dachshunds are bred to flexible standards, but they typically share some notable features, such as a short-haired or long-haired coat, a body that is elongated and low-slung, an arched neck, and strong limbs.
Dachshunds are not considered hypoallergenic. While they may not cause allergies in all people, those with sensitive allergies may experience reactions when spending time with a Dachshund, as their coats can accumulate dander, which can trigger an allergic reaction. It's important to take into consideration your allergies when selecting a breed of dog. If you're looking for a breed of dog that does not cause allergies, there are a number of hypoallergenic breeds to choose from.
Dachshunds should be fed a nutritionally complete, high-quality diet with a balance of animal protein and vegetable sources. In general, they do best with a poultry-based dry dog food, but for variety, canned food and meals cooked at home can be given as part of their nutrition. If meals are cooked at home, they should include two parts protein (cooked beef, chicken, fish, eggs) and one part carbohydrates (rice, pasta, carrots, etc.). The main nutrition requirements for a dachshund are protein, fat, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals.
To ensure that your home is ready for your new Dachshund, start by dog-proofing your house. Make sure that all potential hazards like toxicity are out of your Dachshund's reach. Close off any potential hiding places that your Dachshund can access. Additionally, be sure to provide a comfortable and safe space for them, like a crate or bed. Also create a consistent potty-training plan and work on basic commands. This all will help establish a good routine for your Dachshund.
Dachshunds come in two sizes: standard and miniature. Standard Dachshunds grow to be around 16-32 lbs and are 8-9 inches tall, while miniature Dachshunds usually reach no more than 11 lbs and their height is usually between 5-6 inches. All Dachshunds have the same general body build, with big eyes, ears, and a long sinuous body. They can appear taller due to their long legs and necks.
The amount of exercise your Dachshund needs depends on multiple factors, such as whether or not they have any health issues, their age, and their energy level. It is generally recommended that all Dachshunds get at least 30 minutes of exercise per day, with 15 minutes of that should be dedicated to walking. This is a minimum, however, and more exercise is advisable if your Dachshund is healthy and in good shape. If your Dachshund is a puppy, it is better to keep their walks short (10 minutes) with several per day.
Dachshunds can make great pets for first-time owners, provided the owners are willing to make some effort to understand the breed. Dachshunds are generally fairly active dogs that have a strong personality. As such, they may need some special attention to ensure they get enough exercise and stay well behaved. Additionally, dachshunds require some patience during the housebreaking process, as they may take longer to learn than other breeds.
The amount of time required to train a Dachshund varies on a case-by-case basis so there is no definitive answer. However, expect to dedicate at least 10-20 minutes a day to working with your pup. Start with short and simple exercises, gradually increasing the difficulty and complexity as your Dachshund becomes more familiar with the commands. Even an extra five minutes spent each day can make a difference, so the more you can commit, the better! It is essential to give your Dachshund plenty of positive reinforcement during their training.
