Questions & Answers
Dachshunds are a unique breed with many fun facts! For instance, the word "Dachshund" comes from the German words for "badger" (Dachs) and "hound" (hund), due to their resemblance to badgers. Dachshunds are known as "sausage dogs" due to their long, slender bodies. Another fun fact is that Dachshunds have three different coat types: smooth, longhaired, and wirehaired.
It is unlikely that a Dachshund will directly cause allergies. However, depending on the individual's allergies, any pet that has fur or dander may trigger an allergic reaction for some people. While Dachshunds tend to be considered a low-dander breed, there is still a potential for an allergic reaction because of their fur. If allergies are a concern, it is recommended that the individual be tested to determine which, if any, pet allergens they are sensitive to. Then it is advised to vacuum and clean regularly to minimize the chances of triggering an attack.
Dachshunds should not be fed chocolate, avocado, alcohol, onions, coffee, macadamia nuts, bones, or any human foods. Poor quality food can lead to health problems for your Dachshund so it's important to pay attention to what you feed them. It's best to stick with high-quality, veterinarian-approved dog food, supplemented with healthy dental chews, fresh vegetables and occasionally proteins. Overeating can cause your pup to become overweight and it can also cause digestive issues and other health problems, so be sure to stick to the recommended portion size.
Preparing for a new Dachshund is an exciting yet often daunting process! To get you started, do your research and get familiar with the breed. Find out their size, energy level, health needs, and temperament. Make sure your home and yard are secure and that potential hazards, such as plants, are away from the puppy's reach. Visit the vet and stock up on the necessary supplies such as toys, beds, food, and grooming essentials. Try to set up a regular routine and enforce that routine to foster good house rules and structure.
The size of your Dachshund puppy will depend on several factors, such as genetics. Generally, a standard Dachshund puppy will grow to be between 8-11 inches in height and 10-30 lbs in weight. A mini Dachshund puppy is usually no more than 11 inches in height and weights between 4-11 pounds. At adulthood, a Dachshund's size will remain about the same, but its weight may increase or decrease depending on its caloric intake, activity level and health.
Though it may be tempting, it's not recommended that you take your Dachshund running. As Dachshunds are small and low to the ground, they are particularly prone to injuries and overexertion, even more so than other breeds of dogs. If you would like to take your Dachshund out for exercise, stick to leisurely walks and make sure to limit the amount of time that your pup is able to run to prevent it from getting injured.
Dachshunds can make wonderful pets for first-time owners, although like any dog, preparedness is key. Generally speaking, they are known to be loyal, lively, and self-assured, with an independent streak that can be charming. Dachshunds are very adaptable and can easily fit into an apartment or small home, but they still require daily exercise. They can be very sensitive and timid, so it is important to socialize them from an early age and to be gentle and consistent with discipline.
Dachshunds are typically considered to be a smart breed of dog. Their curious and active personalities can make them easy to train, and they respond well to positive reinforcement. They can often learn several commands and tricks; some Dachshunds even compete in dog sports and agility. They also have well-developed senses of smell and hearing, enabling them to understand both verbal and nonverbal cues. However, they are also known to be stubborn and willful, so they may require an owner with the patience and consistency to train them appropriately.
