A Dachshund is a unique and recognizable breed of dog, typically characterized by their long, slim bodies and short legs. Their long snouts and pointed ears make them look rather like small, long-bodied hounds. Dachshunds come in three different coat types, known as smooth-haired, wire-haired, and long-haired. Depending on the coat type, they typically come in a wide variety of colors, including black and tan, dapple, and brindle.
Dachshunds are generally light to moderate shedders. Though they do not produce as much hair as some other breeds, they can still leave behind some stray hairs around the home. While they do not "non-shed" their coats, their fur does not have an undercoat, which means that they produce less dander and shed less than breeds with thicker coats. Because of this, dachshunds are often seen as a low-shedding breed, making them easier to groom than other breeds.
Feeding a Dachshund should be based on the individual dog's health, size, age, and activity level. A diet rich in proteins, fat, and carbohydrates is recommended. Wet or canned food should be broken up into small bite-size pieces. Oils, such as cod-liver or flaxseed, should be added for a healthy coat and skin. Dachshunds come in two different sizes, standard and miniature. Standard dachshunds stand between 8 and 9 inches tall at the shoulder and typically weigh 16 to 32 pounds. If you aren't able to walk them for the recommended 30 minutes per day, try breaking your walks into two 15-minute sessions.
Dachshunds are generally friendly and can get along well with other pets, with proper socialization. It's important to introduce a new pet in a controlled environment and gradually increase the amount of contact between them.
