Questions & Answers
Dachshunds are a small to medium-sized breed of dog belonging to the hound family. They are sometimes referred to as wiener dogs or sausage dogs because of their long, narrow bodies and short legs. The breed originates from Germany, where breeders originally developed them to track and flush out badgers and other burrowing animals because of their long, slender build and short legs. They come in multiple sizes including standard sizes, miniature sizes, and “rabbit” size that originated in Germany.
Dachshunds have an extraordinary coat! Most often, they will have a short, smooth, and shiny coat, though their canicues, or longer-haired breed, have a distinctive and beautiful coat that's both silky and thick. Their colors range from black and tan to reds, creams, and more. The coat is water-resistant, ensuring that they stay dry during their infamous hikes through meadows, creeks, and more! They have an undercoat that makes them one of the hardiest of breeds that can survive in any climate.
The best food for Dachshunds depends on their current age and activity level, as well as any health problems they may have. For example, Dachshunds that are actively growing and young should have meals that are high in protein and fat-based proteins. If they are older, you will want to look for formulas that have fewer calories and a lower fat content. Additionally, Dachshunds benefit from omega fatty acids, probiotics and glucosamine as these help promote a healthy immune system, digestive system, bones and joints.
Preparing your home for your new Dachshund is relatively easy. Start by puppy-proofing your home, including blocking off stairs, securely locking up cleaning supplies and medicines, and blocking off any electrical outlets or wires. Additionally, make sure to provide areas for your pup to rest and play, including toys, crates, a bed, and soft items. You should also provide your pup with an identification tag on their collar. Additionally, make sure you have an abundance of appropriate chew toys, as Dachshunds are known to chew.
Dachshunds come in a variety of sizes. The size of the breed is divided into three categories known as standards, miniatures, and kaninchen. The standard-sized Dachshund is 16 32 pounds and 8 9 inches in height at the shoulder. The miniature-sized breed is typically 11 pounds or less and 5 6 inches in height. The kaninchen size is considered an even smaller variety, and these dogs weigh no more than 3.5 4.5 pounds and are a mere 4 5 inches in height.
The amount of daily exercise and activity your Dachshund needs depends on several factors such as age, health, and individual activity levels. Generally speaking, a healthy adult Dachshund should be taken for a walk or other physical activity at least 30 minutes per day, but it's perfectly reasonable for many dogs to require up to an hour. If the weather is hot, the walk should be shorter and mostly in shaded areas with access to water.
Dachshunds are a breed known for their intelligence, loyal nature, and strong bond to their human family. With proper socialization, most Dachshunds can grow to be excellent family pets, especially around kids. Depending on the individual's temperament, Dachshunds can be tolerant of unfamiliar children, but developing a strong bond with the family is important for the dog to feel secure.
The amount of time a person needs to train their Dachshund each day depends on their training goals and the dog's age and temperament. Generally speaking, beginners may want to start with shorter training sessions and gradually increase the duration to about 20 to 30 minutes per session. As the Dachshund becomes more adept at following commands, the length of the session should increase. Depending on the level of training desired, experienced owners may need to provide up to an hour per day of training to their Dachshund.
