Questions & Answers
Dachshunds are an old breed of dog with a fascinating history. They originated in Germany in the 1800s and were bred to hunting game primarily badgers and other animals of similar size. Dachshunds are known for their long, low build, big ears, and short legs. They come in a variety of colors and coat types, ranging from short fur to longer, wavier coats. Dachshunds generally have high energy levels and can be quite independent. They are alert guardians and watchful of strangers.
Managing allergies with Dachshunds can be tricky since they do have a lot of fur. To help reduce symptoms, you should groom them regularly to remove excess fur and dander from their coat. Vacuuming any furniture they sleep on or come into contact with will also help reduce airborne allergens. Additionally, using a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter in the home may also be beneficial in improving air quality. To reduce contact with allergens, it is also important to keep them out of any areas that may contain mold or other common allergens such as pollen.
Dachshunds should not be fed table scraps, fatty meats, or other people foods. Foods with high fat content can cause stomach issues, pancreatitis, and possibly obesity in these pets. Chocolate and chocolate-based products, as well as caffeine, are also toxic to dachshunds and should be avoided. Additionally, bones, such as rawhide, can cause choking and intestinal blockage. Nuts, especially walnuts, macadamias, and almonds, can be toxic as well. Dachshunds should be fed a diet specifically created for their needs.
To prepare for a new Dachshund it’s important to create an environment that’s safe and comfortable for them. Make sure to block off any areas that could be unsafe and put away anything that could be a hazard like tiny objects or things that could be accidentally swallowed. Install baby gates or secure off-limit areas and provide them with an ample supply of toys and beds in their designated area. Provide at least one safe place for them to retreat to if they’re feeling overwhelmed or scared.
The size of your Dachshund puppy will depend on a few factors, such as its genetics, body type, and gender. Generally speaking, a Dachshund puppy will reach adulthood between the ages of nine and twelve months. For the standard short-haired Dachshund, the breed will typically reach a size of 8-9 inches tall and weigh anywhere between 16-32 pounds. If you own a miniature long-haired Dachshund puppy, it will grow to a height of 5-6 inches and weigh up to 11 pounds.
Generally, Dachshunds enjoy being in the water, however not all of them like to swim! Depending on the individual Dachshund, some may love to swim and even fetch objects out of the water, while others can get anxious in deep water. That being said, it is important to introduce your Dachshund gradually to swimming by starting at shallow depths and utilizing encouragement and positive reinforcement to get them used to the activity. Before you take your Dachshund into a pool, lake, or river, you should ensure that your dog is comfortable and calm.
Dachshunds generally do well with children and are good family pets. The Dachshund breed is known for its patience and loyalty, making them a great choice for a family dog. Although they have a lot of energy and can be somewhat active, Dachshunds usually aren't aggressive. Having said that, they do require special care and should be supervised around children, as their small size makes them vulnerable to accidental injury. With proper training and socialization, Dachshunds make excellent companions for children of all ages.
Dachshunds have long been considered intelligent canines. Studies have shown that they can understand commands, learn from their mistakes, and solve puzzles. Unlike some breeds, dachshunds have the ability to apply these skills to their environment, making them intelligent problem solvers. Additionally, they are often enthusiastic and alert when trying to please their humans, which is a sign of their intelligence. Furthermore, their naturally mischievous nature and penchant for digging proves their smarts and intelligence.
