Questions & Answers
Dachshunds are one of the oldest breeds and their origins date as far back as 15th century Germany. They were initially bred to hunt small animals such as badgers, and are not only a very loyal breed, but also one of the most recognizable because of their long, low frame, sausage-shaped body and short legs. Some fun facts about Dachshunds include that they are intelligent and quiet, so make great apartment pets. They were once referred to as "earth dogs" because of their burrowing tendencies and long claws specifically designed to dig out their prey.
Dachshunds are not known to cause allergies. However, as any pet could potentially cause an allergic reaction, it is important to consider all factors before bringing any pet into your household. It is recommended to meet with a dog before committing to a decision, as it often helps to get an accurate reading of how you will react when confronted with the various allergens that a pet may bring in. Additionally, if you know that a family member has a history of allergies, it is best to consult a doctor or allergy specialist in order to come to the most informed decision.
Dachshunds should not be given foods that are too salty, fatty, or sugary. Such treats can lead to excessive weight gain, dental issues, and digestive upset. As their stomachs are delicate, Dachshunds should never be fed table scraps or raw food. Certain foods such as grapes, chocolate, garlic, onions, and anything with caffeine should be strictly avoided, as they are toxic to dogs. Bones can also be dangerous, as they can get stuck in the dogs' throat or cause an obstruction.
Being the best puppy parent for your Dachshund involves providing your pup with lots of love and affection, as well as establishing a daily routine that works for both of you. Creating a clear structure for rules and expectations can help your pup understand their boundaries, while dedicating quality time to play, exercise, training, and bonding will create a strong connection between the two of you. Investing in regular trips to the vet, feeding them a balanced and nutritious diet, and making sure to address any behavioral issues promptly can all increase your pup's quality of life.
Dachshunds come in two standard sizes Standard and Miniature. The Standard Dachshunds usually weigh between 16 and 32 pounds, while the Miniature variety typically weigh 11 pounds or less. Furthermore, there are three types of coats available for both sizes Smooth, Long-Haired, or Wire-Haired. Smooth is the shortest of the coats, followed by Long-Haired, and then Wire-Haired which is the most challenging to maintain because it needs to be groomed regularly.
Dachshunds are active dogs, requiring a lot of exercise. They have a natural instinct to hunt and explore, so daily walks and playtime in a fenced-in area is very important to keep them healthy, happy, and well-balanced. A Dachshund requires at least two 30 minute walks a day to fulfill their exercise needs. If the daily walks are not taken, their energy can quickly become pent up and cause them to become destructive. However, once they get enough exercise they can relax and be content.
Generally, Dachshunds get along very well with other pets. However, factors such as age, breed, energy level, and overall temperament can all play a role in determining how a Dachshund will interact with their four-legged friends. Generally speaking, when provided with proper introductions and boundaries, Dachshunds are likely to completely accept other pets. With that said, it's important to note that some Dachshunds are naturally more independent and may not be as eager to make furry friends.
The amount of minutes per day required to train a Dachshund will depend on the individual pup and the desired goal. Generally, it is recommended to dedicate at least 20 to 30 minutes of quality time with your pup to ensure successful and effective training. This time should be spent reinforcing good behaviors while also providing mental stimulation. You may need to practice certain commands or tricks a few times a day for best results. If you feel that 20-30 minutes per day is not enough, you can increase that amount gradually. When it comes to training a Dachshund, consistency is key.
