Questions & Answers
Dachshunds are a unique and beloved breed of dog that falls under the hound family. This family is split into two categories, scent hound and sight hounds. Dachshunds are known to be considered a scent hound as this breed is used for hunting and tracking scent, due to their remarkable sense of smell. This has been used to help them gain an advantage in hunting small game such as rabbits and foxes. It was not until 15th century Germany that this breed became recognizable and acquired its name which loosely translates to 'badger dog'.
The coat of a Dachshund is typically short and smooth, although they can also come in long or wirehaired varieties. The short coat is usually shiny, while the longer coats can have a rougher texture. The most typical coat colors you might find on a Dachshund are red, black and tan, or chocolate and cream. Dachshunds can even come in a brindle coat with tan markings. This breed is also known for its hypoallergenic qualities, which make them an excellent choice for those prone to allergies.
Dachshunds are an intelligent and hardy breed of dog that enjoy a balanced diet of quality kibble and fresh meats. Depending on weight, age and activity, they should be given portions that will help to maintain their healthy weight. Frequently, it is recommended to feed two meals of about ¼ to ½ cup of food for small-sized dachshunds and ½ to 1 cup for larger ones.
Before getting a Dachshund, some essential items you'll need are a leash and collar, food and water dishes, puppy-approved toys, dental care items, a appropriately-sized dog bed or blanket, grooming supplies, a crate or small playpen, and waste removal items. You'll also need treats for training, a harness for walking, and ear cleaning solutions, as well as an enzyme cleaner for any accidents.
Dachshunds are a small breed of dog, so they don't reach the large size of other breeds. Generally, a fully grown Dachshund will reach around 8 to 9 inches tall at the shoulder. When measured from the tip of its nose to the base of its tail, a full-grown Dachshund will be between 12 and 16 inches long. They usually weigh between 16 and 32 pounds, depending on the size of the Dachshund. Miniature Dachshunds tend to weigh between 8 and 11 pounds.
Dachshunds generally have an enthusiasm for swimming, though it depends on the individual dog. Some may enjoy the activity more than others, and proper supervision and guidance may be necessary to teach them to be comfortable and safe in the water and within their own abilities. Many Dachshunds can be taught swimming as a puppy if started off properly. If your Dachshund takes to the water, they may be quite content indoor and outdoor swimming. Ultimately, it is up to the dog's individual temperament, but Dachshunds do not have a natural aversion to swimming.
Dachshunds can be good with children when raised with them, however they're small so it's important that interactions are supervised. These dogs are active and playful, and also tend to bond closely with their owners, which makes them amenable in a family environment. That being said, Dachshunds can be jealous and possessive, so it's best that children learn to respect the dog respecting its boundaries. To get the most out of the pup and the relationship with the kids, start off with early socialization and proper training to ensure both the pup and children are comfortable.
Dachshunds are widely known as a brave and determined breed, and by extension, many consider them to be quite smart. As with all dogs, their intelligence is relative to the individual and its environment. That said, Dachshunds do have a reputation for being clever, resourceful, and cunning. They tend to learn quickly and can become quite savvy with training. They are also known to remember commands and routines even after long periods of time. With these qualities, they make excellent pets and can be some of the most intelligent and entertaining dogs in the canine world.
