Questions & Answers
Dachshunds are classified as hound dogs, and have long, low bodies that are suited for hunting small animals in burrows and dens. They are affectionate and loyal companions, that are generally very outgoing and cheerful. They come in three coat types: smooth, wirehaired, or longhaired. Dachshunds are active and curious, and make great family dogs, but need loads of exercise and activity as they have lots of energy.
Dachshunds are considered to be moderate shedders, meaning they do not produce an especially large amount of shed fur when compared with larger breeds. However, with regular brushing and grooming, the amount of shedding can be kept to a minimum. These dogs also come in a "hypoallergenic" variety with short-haired coats, which may reduce their amount of shedding, however these dogs may not be as effective in terms of fur-reduction as other smaller breeds with hypoallergenic coats.
Dachshunds' diet should include small meals throughout the day consisting of a high-quality dry kibble that is designed for their size and energy level. If supplementing with wet food, make sure it is specific to their size and needs and avoid overfeeding. Treats and snacks should be given sparingly and should not replace regular meals. Human food should only be given in moderation, or as recommended by your veterinarian, since they can cause digestive issues. Fruits and vegetables can add nutritional benefits, but only those that are safe for your dachshund.
Preparing for a new Dachshund requires time and effort, but is worth the investment. Make sure to do some research to understand their specific needssuch as dietary requirements, physical activity, grooming and potential health issues. Also, create a safe and comfortable environment for them by providing beds, toys, and a calming home atmosphere. Consider investing in a quality crate for training purposes and slowly introduce them to other animals or children. Additionally, consult with a veterinarian to ensure your pet is up to date on necessary vaccinations and be sure to schedule routine visits in the future.
Dachshunds come in two different sizes: standard and miniature. The standard dachshund is typically between 16 to 32 pounds and stands 8-9 inches tall. The miniature dachshund is usually 11 pounds or less and stands 5-6 inches tall. The two sizes are further divided into four different varieties, including short-haired, long-haired, wire-haired, and smooth-haired.
Dachshunds have a reputation as loyal and spunky little dogs, and though they are not considered the best swimmers, some do enjoy taking a dip in the water. While most Dachshunds don't like to swim for long periods of time, some will engage in a short swim if given the opportunity. Getting a Dachshund used to swimming can take some time since their little legs may feel awkward in the water and they appear to lack confidence in the pool.
Generally, yes, Dachshunds are known to get along with other pets given sufficient time to adjust. With proper introductions and socialization, Dachshunds can learn to exist harmoniously with other cats, dogs, and smaller animals such as hamsters or birds. Though some Dachshunds are more outgoing than others or may need a little extra help when it comes to getting along with other animals, with patience and tenderness, Dachshunds are typically quite friendly to and accepted by other pets they meet.
Training a Dachshund can be both easy and difficult, depending on the individual pup. With patience and consistent techniques, pottyand crate-training, as well as commands like 'sit' and 'stay' can easily be taught. However, when it comes to certain behaviors, like barking, digging, and chasing, training can be more challenging. Despite this, with consistent and positive reinforcement, even these behaviors can be taught and modified, making it easier to work with your pup.
