Questions & Answers
Dachshunds are incredibly interesting and unique animals! Perhaps the most interesting thing of all is their incredibly long bodies. Their strange proportions make them an attention-grabber wherever they go. They also can be found in three distinct coat types smooth, wirehaired, and longhaired which is interesting for a single breed. Dachshunds have been around since the 1600s and were originally bred to hunt badgers and other small prey. This background, combined with their long body and short little legs, make them formidable hunters.
Dachshunds have a unique coat of fur that is usually relatively short and wiry. It may either have a soft, finer texture or be a bit coarser in nature. They typically feature a distinctive red-brown hue, but may also come in a range of beautiful colors including black, chocolate, fawn, cream, and more. Furthermore, it is common for them to have a variety of different markings on their coats, often with white paws, white stripe across their back, and a white muzzle.
Dachshunds should not be fed chocolate, onions, or grapes, as these can be toxic. Additionally, nuts such as macadamia nuts and walnuts can also be hazardous and should not be fed to Dachshunds. It is best to feed them a high-quality food specifically designed for small dogs. Rawhide, bones, and bull kneecaps should also be avoided because they can splinter and get stuck in the Dachshund's throat.
Yes, Dachshunds do have some special requirements. They need a reasonable amount of exercise and an active lifestyle to stay healthy. They don't require a great deal of grooming and bathing needs, but they do suffer from back issues so it is important to purchase an appropriate-sized bed and make sure the area where they sleep is free from hazards. Good dental hygiene is also vital, as bad oral health can cause a variety of issues.
Your Dachshund pup's size as an adult can be hard to predict as puppies grow in their own individual ways. Generally, males will reach 16-18 inches at the shoulder, while females are usually a bit smaller at 12-16 inches. Weight wise, males usually weigh in at around 16-32 pounds, while females are usually smaller, weighing in at between 11-16 pounds. Of course there are exceptions when it comes to size, as some adults may be larger or smaller than the standard. Ultimately, it comes down to the individual genetics and diet of the pup.
It is recommended that a Dachshund should get at least 30 minutes of exercise each day, and anywhere from 60-90 minutes if they are particularly active and energetic. The exact amount of time each day to walk your Dachshund will depend on a few factors including their age, their overall health and size, and the climate you live in. If you live in an area with hotter summers, then you may need to adjust the amount of walking time to one that is more comfortable for your Dachshund.
Dachshunds can make wonderful pets for first-time owners, as they are an incredibly loyal breed with an outgoing and friendly nature. These dogs may be small but they have a lot of energy and need plenty of exercise, so they may be better suited to people with an active lifestyle. As they are prone to separation anxiety, Dachshunds do not do well when left home alone for extended periods of time, so a first-time owner would need to make sure they are able to commit to providing their pet with plenty of attention and companionship.
It is often said that Dachshunds are amongst the smartest breeds of dogs! Their intelligence allows them to learn quickly and they have a strong desire to please, making them highly trainable. Dachshunds are frequently seen in sporting events and agility courses, indicating they are quick learners who understand and respond to commands quickly. They also have an inquisitive nature and, with daily mental stimulation, can be taught a variety of fun tricks and activities.
