Questions & Answers
Dachshunds are known for their inquisitive, playful, and energetic nature. What makes them really fascinating is their remarkable personalities. Dachshunds can be fiercely loyal and protective of their family and have an incredible capacity for affection. They can also be independent, funny, and incredibly intelligent, making them both a joy and a challenge to live with. What might come as a surprise is that they're equally as capable as larger breeds when it comes to training and agility.
While all Dachshunds do have some level of an allergen present, they are not considered to be a hypoallergenic breed. Generally speaking, most hypoallergenic breeds are dogs that do not shed fur and generally have a shorter coat with few allergens present. While Dachshunds may have a shorter coat, they are more likely to shed fur and produce more allergens. However, while Dachshunds may not be considered hypoallergenic, their shedding levels are low compared to most other breeds.
Dachshunds should not be given fatty foods, as this can cause pancreatitis; table scraps, chocolate, garlic, onions, grapes, raisins, and alcohol should all be avoided. Bones, either real or artificial, can cause choking or obstruction. Cooked fat trimmings that cause gastrointestinal distress can also be troublesome, as they can lead to diarrhea or vomiting.
Before taking home a Dachshund, it is important to be prepared with the essentials. You will need to buy a collar and leash, food and water dishes, a bed, chew toys, nail clippers, and brushes specifically designed for short-haired breeds. Additionally, a pet carrier may be useful for trips to the vet or other outings where you want to bring your pup along. You'll also want to pick up some treats for training, as Dachshunds are exceptionally intelligent and can learn quite a few tricks with some patience and persistence.
Dachshunds are generally considered small-sized dogs; however, when placed in comparison to other small-sized breeds, the Dachshund may appear to be somewhat bigger. They are considered a medium-sized breed, falling somewhere between small and large, and depending on the size of the individual dog, may appear larger than other small breeds. Generally, an adult Dachshund will measure between 12-16 inches at the shoulder and will weigh anywhere between 14-32 pounds.
Dachshunds are an active breed of dog, with many varieties suited to different types of activities. They can typically run for several miles without tiring and do well in agility and flyball competitions. They are highly energetic, lively and alert, perfect for households with children or active lifestyles. Dachshunds love to play and can easily become bored if they are not given enough regular exercise. They also enjoy being outdoors and exploring the world around them and therefore make excellent jogging or hiking companions.
Generally, Dachshunds can get along with other pets but it is important to introduce them properly and to consider the individual personalities of both animals. Depending on the energy of each pet, they may need to be supervised while together and given plenty of playtime to release their energy. Additionally, providing some toys for the animals to play with can also encourage positive social interactions between the pets. If done correctly, caring owners can potentially find that Dachshunds get along well with other pets in the house.
The amount of time you should spend training your Dachshund each day depends largely on your goals and the type of training you're undertaking. Generally speaking, you should allocate roughly 15-20 minutes per day for pup training, with an extra 5-10 minutes each day as the dog matures. If you're engaging in more advanced work, such as teaching a task or trick, you may need to devote closer to 30 minutes per day to ensure success. Ultimately, it's important to maintain a regular, consistent schedule when it comes to training.
