Questions & Answers
Dachshunds are known for being truly one-of-a-kind dogs! Not only are they one of the few breeds to come in two sizes – standard and miniature – they also were bred to do a specific job: hunt badgers! So while they may not look as intimidating as some of the other stronger breeds, they have the tenacity and courage to do the jobs they were intended for.
While Dachshunds fur is typically short and smooth, they are classified as light shedders. Unfortunately, they are not low-shedding, non-shedding, or hypoallergenic as some other breeds of dogs are, and they typically shed year-round. Since their coats are short, they do not shed as much as many longer-haired breeds, but they still shed consistently throughout the year. To minimize the amount of shedding, it is important to keep them brushed regularly and bathed as needed.
Yes, Dachshunds have some special dietary needs that are unique to their breed. They are typically classified as small-mouthed breeds, meaning their mouths and throats are small and can easily become blocked. This means Dachshunds should be fed with a specially-designed size of kibble that is easy for them to eat and digest. Additionally, these breeds are known to have sensitive stomachs and digesting certain foods like onions, garlic, and grapes can create digestive distress.
Preparing for your new Dachshund can be an exciting time! First, plan to give your pup ample space to get comfortable in their new home. Make sure you have the appropriate supplies for a Dachshund, such as a crate or kennel, food and water bowls, toys, collar and leash, and food and treats. Additionally, it is beneficial to research the specific breed and their unique needs, such as grooming and potential health issues. You should also consider taking your Dachshund to a vet for a check-up as soon as you can.
Dachshunds come in two sizes Standard and Miniature. The Standard has a typical height of 8 to 9 inches at the shoulder and weigh an average of 16 to 32 pounds. The Miniature is no taller than 5 to 6 inches at the shoulder and typically weigh less than 11 pounds. The two sizes are almost impossible to tell apart when looking at only height, but their weight and overall size can help distinguish them. There is also a third size, known as a 'Tweenie', that tends to fall in between the Standard and Miniature size.
An ideal amount of daily exercise for a Dachshund is around 30 minutes. This should include a leisurely walk, as well as plenty of time for running and playing, as Dachshunds need mental stimulation and exercise to stay happy and healthy. It's a good idea to keep your walks to shorter distances and less strenuous activity, as the breed is prone to back injuries. As a general guide, split the 30 minutes into three walks, each about 10 minutes long, and engage the Dachshund in other activities for the other 10 to 15 minutes.
Dachshunds are friendly and playful dogs, and the majority of them will naturally get along very well with kids. Their small size makes them a great companion pet and it is important to socialise them from a young age and teach your children how to interact with them in order to foster a good relationship. A Dachshund should not be left alone with young children, as the child may accidentally hurt the dog, and the dog's natural instinct to protect itself can also kick in.
Dachshunds have long been known for their intelligence and are considered relatively smart dogs. They were originally bred to dig and hunt, so they tend to exhibit the same traits of being able to quickly learn new tasks and problem solve. In addition, they almost always remember what they learn and can apply it in the future. They are also very loyal and loving, so these qualities can back up their claim to intelligence. It has been noted that they can also be independent, but their almost intuitive understanding of their humans is remarkable.
