Questions & Answers
Dachshunds have earned their place in our hearts for many reasons, but perhaps the most interesting thing about them is their remarkable resilience. These loyal, long-bodied pooches were bred to dig and hunt in the thickest of dens and badger burrows, and are still known for their extraordinary bravery and determination to this day. Not surprisingly, they have also charmed us with their unique appearance, endearing personalities, and endless capacity to show affection to their human companions.
Dachshunds have a signature long, smooth coat that can come in a variety of colors and patterns. Their single layer coats can be either shorthaired, wirehaired, or longhaired with undercoats of short, dense fur. The shorthaired variety is the most common and is especially popular for those who do not want to spend long hours grooming their pet. It is smooth and short and easy to maintain with regular brushing. The wirehaired has coarse, thick fur which provides more protection from the elements.
Dachshunds have delicate digestive systems and as such shouldn't be given table scraps or human food. Specifically, they should not be given onions, garlic, grapes or raisins, which can cause severe digestive issues. Additionally, avoid giving them dairy, which can cause gas and digestion problems. Nuts should also be avoided as they can lead to pancreatitis. Alcoholic beverages and anything containing caffeine can also be toxic and are best avoided.
Before bringing a new Dachshund home, take the time to properly prepare. Create a safe environment for the pup by puppy-proofing your home and securely fencing in your yard. Make sure to gather all of the essential items including a crate, bedding, toys, food, and water. It's also important to learn about Dachshunds' exercise needs, health concerns, and grooming requirements so that you can adequately meet them. Additionally, locate a good veterinarian that you trust and start researching training tips and techniques.
Dachshunds come in two sizes: standard and miniature. Generally, the standard size will be 8-9 inches at the shoulder, while the miniature will be 5-6 inches. The weight of a fully grown adult will depend on the size of the Dachshund; standard size adults typically weigh between 16-32 pounds, and miniature adults weigh between 11-15 pounds. Size is difficult to predict in puppies since they are still growing and developing, but in general, a Dachshund puppy will grow to be full adult size by one year of age.
It's possible to take a Dachshund running but only if certain precautions are taken. Dachshunds may have shorter legs, but they are still capable of some physical exercise. However, it is important to build up to it slowly and never take them too far. Start with short jogs and walks and gradually increase their distance, duration, and intensity. Make sure that the surface they are running/walking on is relatively flat and doesn't have any inclines or declines.
Dachshunds are generally good with children and can make excellent family pets. They tend to be good-natured and friendly, although some may be more territorial and standoffish. It is important to make sure they receive proper socialization and training, as with any pet. A well-socialized Dachshund can be a delightful, loyal companion to kids of all ages. They are also quite independent and can be left alone for short periods of time, allowing kids to participate in other activities.
Dachshunds are known as quite intelligent breeds of dogs. They are often eager to please their owners, making them quick learners. Many Dachshunds learn commands like "sit," "stay," and "lie down" with ease, proving how clever they can be. Additionally, Dachshunds are often successful with various activities such as search and rescue, scent work, tracking, and even drugand bomb-detecting. This demonstrates that Dachshunds have an impressive capacity to understand concepts and remember commands.
