Questions & Answers
A Dachshund is a small, smooth-haired or long-haired breed of dog that originated in Germany. It was developed as a working breed for hunting small animals, such as rabbits, and is affectionately referred to as a ‘wiener dog’ because of its size and shape. A Dachshund has a long body sloping downwards to its distinct, stubby legs. Its long, drooping ears and irregular face are well-known features.
Dachshunds are not considered to be hypoallergenic dogs. Hypoallergenic dogs have coats that generate fewer allergens than other breeds. Unfortunately Dachshunds shed quite often and their coats can contain high levels of allergens, making them a poor choice for people who have dog allergies. If someone with allergies is considering a Dachshund, it may be beneficial to check with their doctor or a certified allergist first.
Dachshunds benefit from a species-appropriate diet which includes a high-quality, grain-free dry kibble or canned food, as well as natural raw foods such as fresh meat, organs, vitamin-rich fruits and vegetables. Feeding your Dachshund a healthy balance of proteins, fats and carbohydrates is essential for maintaining their energy levels, growth, and overall health. A good diet should provide them with all the necessary essential nutrients, including essential fatty acids, minerals and vitamins.
Before you get a Dachshund, you should make sure you have all the essentials for providing a safe and comfortable living environment. This includes a leash and collar, food and water dishes, a crate, puppy pads, chew toys, treats, food, and heartworm and flea/tick preventative. You may also want to purchase a grooming brush and nail clippers, a cushion or bed for your pup to sleep on, and a few lightweight blankets for your pup to lie on during the summer or winter.
Dachshunds, sometimes referred to as "wiener dogs" or "sausage dogs," are not considered large dogs. However, they are often known for their disproportionately larger personality. Dachshunds are typically between 8 and 9 inches tall at the shoulder and normally weigh between 16 and 32 pounds. These dogs come in a wide variety of colors and coats and can also be classified by their coat type; smooth, wire-haired or longhaired.
Dachshunds are known to have a lot of energy and be very alert. They tend to be an active breed and love games such as fetch or chasing a ball. They also make great running and jogging companions and enjoy walking. Dachshunds need to be given plenty of opportunities to exercise regularly so that they can blow off some steam and release any built-up energy. It's important to structure playtime with a Dachshund in small increments throughout the day to make sure they remain active and stay in good health.
Dachshunds are typically friendly, social dogs and usually get along well with other pets. Generally, a Dachshund will be able to live harmoniously with other animals, however it is important to introduce them slowly and with lots of supervision. The breeds usual independence and courage may also result in a higher barrier to getting along with other pets, as they may be be more inclined to defend their territory.
Training a Dachshund takes time, effort, and dedication, however it is not impossible. With patience and consistency, you can teach your Dachshund simple commands such as sit, stay, and come, but to truly master advanced tricks and commands it is important to stay consistent with the rules and training plan you have laid out. It is recommended to start training a Dachshund as early as possible, as this breed is very intelligent and eager to learn.
