Questions & Answers
Dachshunds are small, energetic dogs known for their playful and loyal nature. They have a long, slim body, short legs, and pointed ears. Dachshunds often bark to alert their owners of potential danger but are also known for being friendly and even-tempered. Additionally, Dachshunds are usually curious, which makes them great pets for those who love exploration and adventure.
Dachshunds have a unique and distinct coat that is short, but can sometimes have longer fur on the chest and legs. Generally, the coats are shiny and smooth with colors that range from reddish-brown to black-and-tan. They have an almost “waterproof” quality that helps them be warm and dry during wet weather, but also cool in the heat. Dachshunds will need daily brushing to keep their coat free of tangles and debris, and occasional baths to maintain its sheen and healthy look.
Dachshunds should not be fed chocolate, caffeine, grapes, raisins, alcohol, onions, garlic, avocados, raw/undercooked meats, uncooked bones, fatty meats, sweets, or anything salty as these can all make them very ill. It's best to stick with a high-quality commercial dog food or a homemade diet specifically designed for them. Also, always make sure their food has the proper amount of healthy proteins, carbohydrates, and nitrogen needed for growth and development.
Preparing your home for a new Dachshund can be an exciting but daunting task. Firstly, it's important to secure your home by blocking off any dangerous places your pup could wander into, such as stairs or laundry rooms. Make sure all cords and cables are tucked away. Dachshunds are also notorious diggers, so securing a back yard to prevent any unexpected escape attempts should also be considered. Additionally, ensuring that any housemates are properly introduced, establishing a set of rules and boundaries, and crate-training are all integral components of a successful transition.
Your Dachshund puppy's adult size will be determined largely by their breed. These dogs are typically considered "miniature" Dachshunds if they weigh up to 11 pounds, and "standard" if they weigh above 11 pounds. Females are generally smaller than males. On average, miniature Dachshunds will grow to be between 8 and 10 inches tall, and stand 5-6 inches at the shoulder, while standard Dachshunds will be larger; around 12-16 inches in height.
Dachshunds are known for their curiosity and intelligence, and they certainly have a lot of energy to burn! They are lively and active dogs that love to go on walks, play games, and explore their environment. They can be quite determined when it comes to tasks or activities, and they will need regular exercise and mental stimulation to stay happy and healthy. With the right specialized care and plenty of activities, Dachshunds can certainly become lively, active, and entertaining companions!
Dachshunds can make excellent companions for children. They are friendly and have the joyful nature of other small dogs, making them fun-loving playmates. However, they require education and should be taught proper manners. Dachshunds are known for being brave and selfreliant, but because of their size, they can be accidentally hurt by a child playing too rough. With that in mind, it's a good idea to supervise your kids when they are playing with your Dachshund.
The amount of time you need to spend training your Dachshund each day will depend on your individual pet's needs and temperament. Generally speaking, Dachshunds are relatively intelligent and have the potential to learn new skills quickly. Allocating 15 to 30 minutes per day to training them may be enough for basic obedience. However, if you're looking to teach complex behaviours, or if you're aiming to have your pet compete in agility contests, then you may need to dedicate more time to training.
