Questions & Answers
One of the most interesting things about Dachshunds is that despite their small size, they are incredibly courageous. They have a bold, fearless personality that often leads them to think they can take on any challenge. Additionally, their quirky physical features – from their short legs to their ears that hang over their eyes – make them incredibly cute and endearing. Lastly, their curiosity and tendency towards barkiness make them the perfect companion for any family, providing joy and entertainment for all.
Although it's impossible to definitively answer this question as everyone's allergies are unique, dachshunds generally do not cause more allergies than other breeds. Some people may find that their allergies are more affected by the pet dander that dachshunds produce, however it really depends on the individual pet and how much they shed. Therefore, it's recommended to spend time with any individual dachshund before bringing them home to ensure that they are not triggering any allergic symptoms. It's also essential to keep dachshunds groomed regularly in order to reduce dander.
Dachshunds should not be fed a diet high in carbohydrates (starches and sugars) as it could lead to weight gain and obesity. Foods like corn, wheat, rice, potatoes, or other starchy vegetables can add to high calorie intake. Additionally, avoid giving Dachshunds rawhide, bones, or foods like hot dogs, bacon, and sausages, as they can cause stomach upset. Human food should be given in moderation, as many human foods are high in fat and can cause stomach distress and pancreatitis.
If you're thinking of getting a Dachshund, some essential items you should buy include a leash and collar with proper tags, food and water bowls, food specifically tailored to their dietary needs, a high-quality canine bed, chew toys to distribute their chewing energy, and a gentle and calming brush to help keep their coat nice and shiny.
Dachshunds are generally considered small dogs due to their average size and weight. While some can get quite large, they tend to remain shorter than other types of breeds. Therefore, by definition, they do not fit the description of a "big" dog. Still, depending on the individual, Dachshunds can appear and feel larger than other small breeds simply because they can be quite active and energetic. Plus, since their legs are relatively short, they are often portrayed as appearing larger than their full stature.
The amount of time you should walk your Dachshund depends on their age, health, and activity level. Typically, adult dogs should have between 30 minutes and two hours of exercise per day split up into frequent, shorter walks. Puppies have growing bones and need shorter, less intense walks, as well as frequent rests (plus the occasional nap) throughout the day. Elderly dogs may need less activity, so shorter walks with plenty of rest time would be best. It's always a good idea to consult your veterinarian before establishing a regular walking routine.
Dachshunds have the potential to get along with most other pets, provided they are given the chance to socialise appropriately. With proper introduction and supervision, many Dachshunds have been known to develop positive relationships with cats, dogs, and even smaller rodents. However, the extent to which a Dachshund is accepting of other pets will depend heavily on its individual temperament and upbringing. For this reason, it is important that you take your Dachshund's personality into account and approach introductions between it and other animals carefully, in a stress-free environment.
The amount of time you need to devote to training a Dachshund varies depending on the individual dog's personality and learning speed. Generally speaking, you'll want to aim for about 20-30 minutes per day on a regular basis. However, that does not mean that you have to dedicate all of that time to one specific task --you can break down the training sessions into multiple shorter periods. You can scatter those small training sessions throughout the day or group them together into larger blocks, depending on your and your pup's preferences.
