Questions & Answers
Dachshunds are full of fun facts! "Weiner dogs" as they are sometimes called, were originally bred in Germany in the 18th century as hunting and scent hounds. While they were initially bred to hunt badgers, today they are beloved family pets. Dachshunds come in 3 different sizes the standard size is usually about 16 inches, the miniature size is usually about 12 inches, and the "tweeny" size is somewhere in between the two. The breed is known for having a particularly long life span sometimes up to 20 years or more.
Dachshunds are not likely to be hypoallergenic, as they shed hair and dander, both of which have been linked to common allergies. While some breeds of dogs may be considered hypoallergenic based on their coat, Dachshunds' coats are moderate to long-haired which can complicate allergies further. Various grooming methods may help reduce dander and hair shedding, such as regular brushing and bathing, but that does not always negate allergies.
Dachshunds should not be given any kind of human food because it is not properly formulated for their nutritional needs. Foods such as chocolate, grapes, garlic, onions, macadamia nuts, and raisins are toxic and should be kept away from your Dachshund. Many human foods are high in fat, too, such as fatty cuts of meat, butter, and fried foods, which can lead to digestive problems and obesity in dogs. Furthermore, Dachshunds can choke on rawhide bones, smoking items, bones, and small objects.
Yes, Dachshunds have some special requirements that their owners must meet in order to ensure their long-term health and wellbeing. They should be given plenty of exercise, as a Dachshund is an active breed. They also need to be groomed regularly, as their lightweight and slim coats can become tangled and matted if neglected. In addition, Dachshunds have notoriously sensitive backs which can be easily injured if not handled with care. As such, Dachshund owners should be mindful when lifting and carrying their pooch.
Dachshunds typically range in size from 8-9 inches tall and weigh anywhere from 11 to 32 pounds, depending on the type and breed. Dachshunds usually fall into three categories: standard Dachshunds, miniature Dachshunds and miniature/toy Dachshunds. Standard Dachshunds are generally 15-25 pounds, miniature Dachshunds usually don't weigh more than 11 pounds, and miniature/toy Dachshunds weigh four to six pounds.
While every Dachshund is unique and may require varying amounts of walking depending on the individual breed, age, and health, it is generally recommended for Dachshunds to get at least half an hour of outdoor walking per day. For younger Dachshunds, longer and more frequent walks will help keep them generally healthy and help reduce the risk of obesity. In addition to the daily walk, playtime indoors is recommended for older Dachshunds, and activities such as fetch with their favourite toys can be just as good as taking a long walk.
Dachshunds are often considered great family dogs! Noted for their spirited and courageous nature, these pups make great companions for kids, seniors, and nearly all types of people. They love to explore and often show great loyalty to their family. Dachshunds are usually very intelligent and eager to please, which can make potty-training and other basic commands easy to learn. Although they tend to be stubborn at times, they are usually very friendly and can be taught to coexist easily with other pets.
Dachshunds have been consistently recognized as one of the more intelligent breeds of dog. While individual personalities may vary, the breed as a whole tends to show above average understanding of commands and can quickly learn the tasks they are asked to complete. With their attitude and tendency to stay focused on the task given to them, Dachshunds are thought to be among the better breeds of dog when it comes to intelligence and reason.
