Questions & Answers
Dachshunds are an old breed of small to medium-sized dogs, also known as wiener dogs or sausage dogs due to their long, elongated bodies. They are great companion dogs, often depicted as big dogs in a small body. Dachshunds are loyal to their owners and respond well to training. Although they tend to be energetic, they usually enjoy spending lots of time with their owners and thrive in close companionship. They usually get along great with children and with other pets, but may be too rambunctious for very small kids.
Dachshunds are typically known for their earth-toned, smooth coats which tend to be short and fine. A Dachshund's coat can range from a short, smooth, silky hair that lies close to the body, to a slightly longer, wiry-textured, hard outer coat. This breed of dog also comes in a variety of colors including red, black, chocolate, cream, wild boar, and various combinations of these colors.
Dachshunds should not be fed large amounts of food, as this can result in bloating or obesity. Additionally, it is important to avoid foods that are high in sugar, salt, and fat, as such foods can lead to a variety of health issues. Dog treats should also be given in moderation, as excessive amounts of treats can cause weight gain or cause Dachshunds to become picky eaters.
First, create a safe and secure environment for your new Dachshund by doggy-proofing your home. Cover up any potential hazards and keep any cords or wires out of reach. Make sure to remove any toxic plants, household cleaners, and other items that may be dangerous. Next, restrict your dog's access to areas of the house using a baby gate. Ensure that your dog has an area of the house to call his own, and make sure there is always fresh water available.
Dachshunds come in two sizes: standard and miniature. The standard dachshund is usually between 16 and 32 pounds and 8 to 9 inches tall at the withers (highest point of the shoulder blades). The miniature dachshund is usually between 11 and 16 pounds and 5 to 6 inches tall at the withers.
Generally speaking Dachshunds do not enjoy the water or having to swim. While they are brave and will do so if their owner insists or if their safety depends on it, it's not something they appreciate in the same way a Labrador Retriever would. That being said, it is possible for Dachshunds to learn to love swimming with the right amount of training and positive reinforcement. The key goal is to gradually introduce your pup to the water and to give them plenty of incentive and support to feel safe and comfortable in it.
Absolutely! Dachshunds are energetic, loyal, and affectionate companions that make great additions to any family. As long as they get regular exercise and have an affectionate relationship with the family, they will thrive in a household environment. Since they have been bred over time to become a true companion and lapdog, they form strong attachments to their caregivers. Moreover, they are also independent and playful, making them all the more appropriate for families.
Training a Dachshund is similar to training any other breed of dog. Establish consistent rules and reinforce desirable behaviors with positive reinforcement such as treats or verbal praise. Certain tasks, like house training, can be done through a combination of patience and consistency. Other skills, such as walking on a leash or learning new commands, will require more focused attention and may require the help of a certified dog trainer. With proper training and socialization, your Dachshund can become a joyful member of your family.
