Questions & Answers
Dachshunds are lively and energetic dogs that make wonderful companions. They typically have long bodies and short legs, making them popularly referred to as 'wiener dogs' or 'sausage dogs'. It's important to know that Dachshunds need plenty of exercise and activities to stay healthy, both mentally and physically, as they're prone to obesity if inactive for too long. They can be quite vocal, so be sure to be prepared for that when bringing a Dachshund into your home.
Dachshunds are considered low-shedding dogs compared to many other breeds; however, they are not completely non-shedding. Generally, Dachshunds shed a moderate amount of hair and will require regular grooming to keep their coat looking its best. Dachshunds have two different hair types smooth and wirehaired, and both of these coats need regular brushing to remove dirt, debris, and dead hairs. Regular grooming also helps to spread the hair's natural oils throughout their coat, which helps to reduce shedding.
Dachshunds should not be fed foods that are high in fat and sugars as they can easily become overweight and develop diabetes. In addition, feeding Dachshunds cooked bones can cause digestive difficulties and should be avoided. Also, it is important to be mindful of certain human foods such as chocolate, grapes, onions, and avocados, as these are known to be toxic to dogs and should never be given to them.
Before getting a Dachshund, there are several essentials you'll need to have. Most importantly, you should get food, specifically food formulated specifically for Dachshunds. You'll also need toys to keep them busy, a collar, leash, and muzzle for when you take them outside, a grooming brush, toothbrush and toothpaste, a comfortable bed, bowls for food and water, waste disposal bags, and something to help them feel secure, like a blanket or kennel. It's also a good idea to get health insurance to cover any unforeseen ailments that may arise.
Dachshunds come in two size varieties Standard and Miniature. Standard Dachshunds typically weigh between 16 and 32 pounds and can range in height from 8 to 9 inches. Miniature Dachshunds can weigh as little as 11lbs, and measure from 5 to 6 inches in height. Additionally, Dachshunds are sometimes further classified by their coats Short-haired Dachshunds, Wire-haired Dachshunds, and Long-haired Dachshunds.
Dachshunds are an active breed of dogs that love to run, chase, and play. Generally speaking, they can be quite energetic and active. Without regular exercise, they can become bored or frustrated, leading to destructive behavior. Dachshunds are active indoors, enjoying the attention of their owners, but they need to be taken out regularly for long walks and playtime. They are also active outdoors, searching for engaging activities like chasing after a ball, digging holes, and exploring their environment.
Dachshunds can make wonderful, loyal family companions that can be great around children. With proper socialization, these small but mighty pooches can be quite friendly with kids, often bonding with the whole family. That said, it's important to monitor and supervise all interactions between kids and dogs to ensure their safety. As long as the dachshund is treated with respect, they are likely to love your children as much as their own. Training is key, as well, to make sure your pup is aware of how to behave around kids.
Dachshunds, sometimes called the "wiener dog," can be smart and obedient dogs if trained properly. They are loyal companions, and many owners report that their Dachshunds quickly learn commands and can easily follow commands. They are often alert and responsive, making them good watchdogs. They do need a lot of exercise and mental stimulation to keep them out of trouble, however. Nevertheless, Dachshunds can be intelligent and respond to training remarkably well.
