Questions & Answers
Dachshunds are classified as "Working Dogs" by the American Kennel Club, and can be identified by their long bodies, short legs, and trademark floppy ears. They have an independent and spirited character, which encompasses characteristics from the Terrier and Hound breeds. Dachshunds range in size from miniature to standard, with coat varieties such as smooth, wirehaired, or long-haired. Dachshunds are generally active, loyal, brave, and have a love of digging. They make great family pets, as they often form strong bonds with their owners.
While it is possible for someone to be allergic to any breed of dog, Dachshunds are actually considered to be one of the most hypoallergenic breeds due to their minimal amount of shedding. However, even hypoallergenic breeds are not totally free of dander and may still cause a reaction in someone with allergies. In order to determine if you are allergic to a Dachshund, it is best to consult an allergist.
Dachshunds, like all dogs, should be fed a balanced and complete diet. However, they have some dietary needs that are specific to their breed and size. Because they are a smaller breed, they have a unique metabolism that requires a higher energy diet than larger breeds. Additionally, they are prone to preventing bloating and gastrointestinal conditions, and thus, should be fed a diet with a higher percentage of animal proteins than carbohydrates. A veterinarian or an experienced pet nutritionist should be able to provide more detailed advice on the right diet for your Dachshund.
Preparing for a new Dachshund is an enjoyable and gratifying process. First and foremost, be sure to research the breed to have a clear understanding of the breed’s traits, characteristics, and needs. Secondly, make sure to secure appropriate shelter, such as a comfortable bed and a kennel for safe napping. Thirdly, you will need to purchase quality food and treats appropriate for a Dachshund’s sensitive digestive tract.
Dachshunds, often referred as “wiener dogs” or “sausage dogs”, are one of the smallest of the hound dog breeds. Breed standards for the dachshund generally range in size; you can find either a standard or miniature dachshund.
It's important to get your Dachshund out for regular walks to keep them healthy and mentally stimulated. Depending on your pup's age and activity levels, the amount of time and number of walks you give them each day can vary. Generally speaking, you should aim to provide your Dachshund with at least 20 minutes of exercise per day but this can be spilt up into two 10-minute walks if that's easier.
Most Dachshunds get along with other pets exceptionally well, although its always important to introduce them to each other gradually and carefully. Generally socialized at a young age, Dachshunds are playful, energetic, and curious dogs who are prone to get along with the members of their household. With consistency and positive reinforcement, they can learn to accept and respect the presence of other pets in the home. As with all animals, however, some Dachshunds may have a hard time adjusting to new situations, animals, and people.
Dachshunds are often described as being highly intelligent, which makes them a great companion for owners looking for an enjoyable, loyal, and smart pet. They tend to be loyal and have a strong desire to please as well. With the right environment and training, Dachshunds can be easily trained to obey basic commands like sit, stay and come. Dachshunds have also been known to cleverly get out of tight spots or escape from uncomfortable situations. They often come up with creative problem-solving solutions.
