Questions & Answers
Dachshunds are a historically popular breed that are known for their incomparable cuteness and loyal, friendly personalities. Some fun facts to know about them; they have short legs so they can be very quickly and nimbly, they have regular size bodies and long tails giving them an easily recognizable look, they were first bred in Germany around the later part of the 17th century to hunt badgers and have since grown to adapt to urban living quite well, their name in German translates to "badger dog," and they are sometimes referred to as 'weenie dogs.
Dachshunds typically have short, smooth coats that can range in colours such as black and tan, chocolate and tan, red, cream, wheaten, and a variety of other shades. The unique coat of a dachshund consist of tight, hard-to-the-touch outer hairs, as well as a wooly, softer undercoat. The thick double-coat provides insulation during colder months, while making the dachshund less prone to fleas during warmer times.
Your Dachshund will need a diet high in protein and fat to keep them healthy and active. Look for a high-quality dog food that provides the right balance of nutrients, vitamins, and minerals. Aim for a food with at least 18-20% crude protein, 10-12% fat, and 5-7% crude fiber — these parameters should be clearly labeled on the packaging. Avoid foods that contain grain, fillers, and artificial additives, all of which can lead to health issues.
Before welcoming your new Dachshund into your home, it's important to take some preparatory steps. Begin by acquiring the necessary items such as a food and water bowls, nails clipper, and a leash. Consider purchasing a comfortable bed for your Dachshund, preferably one specifically designed for small-breed dogs. To ensure your furry friend is healthy, make sure to book a veterinary appointment; your veterinarian will provide advice on the necessary vaccines and can answer any other questions you might have.
Dachshunds typically come in two different sizes: standard and miniature. Standard Dachshunds are typically 16-32 pounds and measure 12-16 inches from shoulder to paw. Miniature Dachshunds are typically 11 pounds or less and measure 8-11 inches from shoulder to paw. Thanks to the tireless efforts of dedicated breeders, a third size, known as "tweenies" has been increasingly recognised in recent years. These weigh between 11-16 pounds and measure 11-14 inches from shoulder to paw.
The amount of time it is recommended that you walk your Dachshund each day will depend on their age, health, breed, and activity level. As a general rule, an adult Dachshund should have around 40 to 60 minutes of vigorous walking per day, with any additional activity beyond that being up to the owner. Generally speaking, a young puppy that is still growing can benefit from around 30 minutes of light daily exercise, while senior Dachshunds should have closer to 20 minutes per day.
Dachshunds can make great family dogs and can be good with children, depending upon proper socialization, training, and supervision. Generally, Dachshunds are a very loyal, fun, and affectionate breed, and when given the proper individual attention and care, they can ease into a family environment very smoothly. With appropriate guidance and leadership, Dachshunds can learn to respect boundaries and safety rules and peacefully coexist with children in the family.
Dachshunds are an incredibly intelligent breed of dog. Because they were bred as hunting dogs, they are particularly adept at problem-solving and learning new tasks quickly. Dachshunds are also very independent; they are naturally able to think for themselves rather than needing to be guided through every situation. From learning how to open doors or gates to making complex links between commands, Dachshunds have proven to be extremely intelligent companions.
