Questions & Answers
A Dachshund is a small, elongated German breed of dog. Also known as a "sausage dog", they are usually bred with short legs and an elongated body. They come in a variety of colors including red, cream, black and tan, chocolate and others. Their double-coat has soft, downy fur under the longer, wiry overcoat. They are friendly, active and intelligent dogs, making them affable companions for active households. They are also known to be quite loyal and fearless.
Dachshunds are generally considered to be hypoallergenic breeds, meaning they are less likely to cause allergic reactions than other breeds. However, some people may still find that their allergies are aggravated by exposure to a Dachshund. If you have allergies or a family history of allergies, you should consult with your doctor or allergist before getting a Dachshund.
Feeding your Dachshund a nutritious and balanced diet is essential for their overall health and development. Consider feeding them a high quality, grain-free dry kibble that is specially formulated for smaller breeds. When choosing a food, look for one that is made with natural ingredients and contains lots of lean animal proteins, complex carbohydrates, and beneficial fats. When adding wet food to their diet, look for a product specifically designed for small breed dogs. Look for formulas with high-quality proteins and limited amounts of low-quality fillers.
Before bringing your new dachshund puppy home, you will want to make sure you have all the necessary supplies to make sure their transition into their new home is smooth. The essentials you should purchase include a crate or kennel for them to feel safe and secure, a selection of toys to help with teeth and gum health and provide entertainment, several food and water bowls, a soft bed, a collar and leash, nail clippers, and treats for positive reinforcement.
Dachshunds typically range in size from miniature to standard and are generally considered small-to-medium in size. However, they usually appear much larger due to their long bodies and short legs. Being classified as a small dog, a Dachshund would generally not fall into the category of "big dog". Generally, that category includes breeds such as the Newfoundland, Irish Wolfhound, Great Dane, and Mastiffs, all of which are much larger than the average Dachshund.
Dachshunds technically do not need a tremendous amount of exercise, but to keep them happy and healthy, regular activity should be encouraged. Typically, they should have two walks per day, with at least 20 minutes of active exercise such as running, walking, or even a game of fetch per session. Dachshunds can also develop boredom if their activity needs are not adequately met, so it's important to provide them with plenty of toys and activities to keep them entertained. Additionally, mental stimulation, such as puzzle toys or training sessions can be beneficial.
Dachshunds typically get along well with a variety of other pets when they are properly socialized. Generally, Dachshunds are friendly and peaceful dogs, so they can co-exist with cats, birds, and other dogs. Of course, it helps if the Dachshund is introduced to the other pet when it is young to create a comfortable and safe atmosphere for both pets. If the other pet is big and intimidating, keep in mind that being too close to the Dachshund can cause it to become aloof or even aggressive.
Training any dog requires patience, consistency, and love. Dachshunds are independent and quite intelligent, so they will need plenty of mental stimulation. Training a Dachshund may take a bit more consistent effort than with some other dog breeds, and it might be a slightly longer process for them to fully learn any new commands. However, with positive reinforcement, like treats and verbal praise, they can learn basic commands easily. Furthermore, since they are active, they will need plenty of physical exercise to ensure they are getting the mental and physical stimulation they need.
