Questions & Answers
A Dachshund is a breed of dog bred and developed in Germany hundreds of years ago. The name is derived from a German word meaning 'badger dog' and is appropriate, as Dachshunds were bred to hunt badgers and other small animals. These dogs have a long and well-proportioned body that is usually around twelve inches tall and sixteen inches long. They have very short legs and feet, making them adept at crawling through tight burrows.
No, Dachshunds are not hypoallergenic. It's important to keep in mind that all dogs possess an allergen that can cause an allergic reaction in certain individuals. While some dog breeds have what is called a "hypoallergenic coat" meaning they shed little to no hair or dander, Dachshunds are not one of those breeds and they actually require quite a bit of upkeep because of their fur and skin.
Dachshunds are generally omnivores, so they can enjoy a variety of foods. A balanced diet for a healthy Dachshund includes high-quality commercial dog food, as well as homemade meals with fresh ingredients. Meat should be the main component of their diet, with other sources such as vegetables, grains and fats. Depending on the individual dog's energy requirements, the protein should come from sources like fish, beef, chicken and turkey. Carbohydrates such as brown rice, pasta, barley, sweet potato and oats can provide additional energy and fiber.
Before bringing home a Dachshund, essential items you should buy include a comfortable and secure dog carrier, food and water dishes, a sturdy leash, a collar with tags, and a bed or cushion for your pup. Additionally, chew toys, doggy treats, and a punch of patience can be greatly beneficial. Investing in an identification microchip and enrolling in basic training classes are recommended too. Ensuring that your pup receives regular exercise and access to an outdoor play area can also be beneficial.
Generally, full-grown Dachshunds weigh between 16 and 32 pounds, depending on the size at which they are bred. Most standard Dachshunds reach the upper end of this range, while miniature Dachshunds range in the lower end. When reaching maturity, a puppy’s size will be dependent on the care it receives throughout its development. A pup that is fed a healthy diet and receives appropriate exercise will reach its full growth potential.
Dachshunds need a moderate amount of exercise to stay healthy and happy. At a minimum, they should get around thirty minutes of exercise a day in the form of walks, runs, or playtime. If they are given a bit more vigorous exercise, that is even better for their mental and physical health, as it will help them to stay active and in shape. This is especially important for heavier Dachshunds, as they may be more prone to obesity without the proper exercise.
Dachshunds can make great first-time pets for those looking for a loyal companion. These loyal, alert, and brave little dogs are highly trainable, making them easy to manage and control in any family setting. Dachshunds also require relatively low maintenance in order to stay healthy and happy. As their size makes them well-suited for apartment living, they also do not need a great deal of outdoor exercising. With proper training, they can even learn basic commands and become quite loyal and loving companions.
The amount of time it takes to train a Dachshund each day can vary depending on the age and experience level of the dog as well as the specific behaviors and commands the owner is trying to teach. Generally speaking, though, owners should plan on devoting at least 20 minutes per day to Dachshund training. Ideally, this should be broken up into two or three short training sessions throughout the day, as this will be more effective than having one extended session.
