Questions & Answers
Dachshunds, or "wiener dogs,"are cheerful and fun-loving dogs with a long and interesting history. They are part of the hound family and were initially bred to hunt badgers. Dachshunds come in standards, miniatures, and toy sizes. Their short legs and long bodies give them a unique quality and their personalities vary depending on the breed. Fun fact: The world’s smallest dachshund once measured just 5.6 inches from withers to tail.
Dachshunds are a breed with an incredibly low-shedding coat type. While it is difficult to guarantee the coat of any particular individual, when it comes to purebred Dachshunds, they are relatively non-shedding and the amount of loose hair is minimal. They may have a light undercoat, which usually drops out in the warmer months, but because of their short coat, they do not shed nearly as much as other breeds. That being said, they still need regular brushing and grooming to prevent mats and tangles from forming.
Dachshunds should not be given foods containing large amounts of fat, such as bacon or sausage, as this can cause pancreatitis. Additionally, they should not be given garlic, onions or chives as these can cause red blood cell damage. Avoid foods with sodium, such as salty snacks. Furthermore, their food should not contain sugar or Xylitol as both of these can be toxic to them. Additionally, chocolate and caffeine should be avoided due to the potential toxicity of these foods.
Before bringing your new Dachshund home, take some time to properly prepare your residence. Firstly, evaluate your house or apartment for potential safety hazards. Secure any electrical cords, block off any stairs or other areas your pup could access that are deemed off-limits, and make sure any chemicals or household cleaners are safely stored away. Secondly, sort out the necessary accessories for your pup. Make sure you have the basics such as dog food, water dishes, a bed, collar, and leash.
Dachshunds come in three sizes: Standard, Miniature, and Canine. The sizes vary in height, with Standard Dachshunds being the largest ranging from 16-32 inches. Miniature Dachshunds are typically 8-11 inches tall, and Canine Dachshunds are the smallest, measuring up to 4 inches tall at the shoulder. Each size offers its own unique characteristics, making them the perfect size pet for a variety of different homes and lifestyles.
Yes, Dachshunds are active dogs by nature. They require daily, physical and mental stimulation in order to stay healthy. Dachshunds are equipped for long runs and hunts so they need plenty of exercise to run off their excess energy. They are great at agility courses, retrieving, running after a ball, and playing any active game. Dachshunds are loyal companion dogs that will cheerfully accompany their owners on adventures and long walks.
Generally, Dachshunds get along well with kids, as they are friendly and affectionate, and they like being around people. Of course, the exact outcome of this depends on the personality and temperament of the particular Dachshund and how it was raised. A good indicator to look for when considering bringing a Dachshund into a house with children is to observe how the dog behaves around people as a pup. If it is peaceful, relaxed and good with other dogs and people, it will probably get along great with kids.
Training a Dachshund requires commitment and dedication. Depending on the level of training, the amount of time needed to train Dachshunds may vary, but as a general rule of thumb, a minimum of 15-20 minutes each day is recommended. If you are planning on teaching complex commands to your dog, you may need to dedicate even more time per day. To make training easier, make it fun. Using treats, toys, and verbal praise are great incentives when training your dog. Keep sessions interesting and engaging to capture and maintain your dog's attention. Lastly, remain consistent;
