Questions & Answers
A Dachshund is a small dog breed that originated in Germany centuries ago. It is a short-legged, long-bodied breed that is part of the Hound family and is widely recognized for its loyal, independent, and spirited personality. The breed's size ranges from standard to miniature, with standard weighing up to 32 pounds and miniature ranging between 11-17 pounds. Dachshunds are known to be independent thinkers with a great sense of smell and strong determination, making them ideal for activities that involve hunting, tracking, and tunneling.
Dachshunds are considered to be low-shedding dogs, but they are not considered to be non-shedding dogs. Dachshunds, like most breeds of canine, tend to shed their coats seasonally, which means that they will shed more around the spring and summer months. That being said, dachshunds generally don't shed as much as other breeds and certainly don't require frequent brushing or de-shedding.
It is important to keep a close eye on what Dachshunds consume as certain foods can cause digestion problems and other health issues. Some products they should never eat include chocolate, alcohol, grapes, raw eggs, raw potatoes, certain nuts, onions, avocado, and macadamia nuts. Additionally, bones can easily splinter so they should not be part of a Dachshund's diet, as well. While it is okay to give your pet a few treats, they should be nutritious and in moderation.
To best prepare for your new Dachshund, the essential items you will need are a few toys, a bed, food and water bowls, and of course a collar and leash. Start off by secluding a portion of the house or a single room for your pup, designating it as a safe space that offers a quiet retreat where your pup can retreat from any frightening or uncomfortable situations. The room should contain all of the essential items mentioned above. Make sure that the toys, bed, and bowls are all in places that your pup can access without having to jump or climb.
Dachshunds generally come in two sizes: standard and miniature. The standard size is generally longer, averaging between 16-32 pounds and 16-32 inches tall from the ground to the shoulders. The miniature size is about 11 pounds in weight and generally 8-9 inches tall from the ground to the shoulder. Both sizes can come in a variety of colors and fur lengths. Additionally, there are also "tweenies," which are a mix of the standard and miniature sizes.
Dachshunds are small pups, but don't be fooled, they are very energetic dogs. They appreciate a good romp in the backyard and enjoy the outdoors. They also like to play interactive and mental games, so making sure they get plenty of mental stimulation throughout the day is recommended as well. Dachshunds also usually have a good stamina for longer activities like going out for hikes or runs. Most Dachshunds of all ages can take part in activities like agility, flyball, and Earthdog competitions as well as other events.
Dachshunds can be great companions for children of all ages! Their small size and friendly disposition can help them to establish a powerful bond with their human family members. Dachshunds are gentle, loving, and smart, making them an excellent choice for children in need of a loyal four-legged friend. They also have plenty of energy and can keep up with kids during activities, providing them with companionship and someone to run around with. Additionally, their short coat means they don't require a lot of grooming, reducing the amount of upkeep associated with larger breeds.
Training a Dachshund can be a challenging but rewarding process. It's best to start with basic commands such as sit, stay, down, come, and leave it. Begin by finding a quiet place with few distractions and start with simple commands and plenty of positive reinforcement. Treats are usually the best incentive into getting a Dachshund to understand what you want them to do. Make sure to be consistent so that your Dachshund knows what to expect from you. Short, frequent sessions work best for Dachshunds as they have short attention spans.
