Questions & Answers
A Dachshund is a unique breed of dog with a long body and short legs. There are two different types of Dachshunds, a standard and mini. The standard Dachshund ranges from 16 to 32 pounds and ranges from 8-9 inches tall at the shoulder, while the mini Dachshund weighs an average of 11 pounds, ranging from 5-6 inches in height. A Dachshund's coat colors can range from wirehaired, black and tan, brindle and piebald and it even comes in a long-haired variety.
Dachshunds do shed, albeit not as frequently and in not a large amount as other breeds. This breed is considered to have a low-level of shedding, so their coat requires consistent as well as daily upkeep to maintain their appearance and well-being. With that being said, their coat does not need to be untreated for too long. A relatively short burst of grooming once a week will be enough to keep their coat in optimal condition.
Dachshunds generally do best on a high-quality, species-appropriate diet. That means a diet of mostly proteins such as beef, poultry, fish, eggs, and other meat sources. Additionally, a good commercial dog food formulated specifically for Dachshunds is recommended, as it will contain the right balance of nutrients for their smaller size and particular digestive needs. Additionally, certain fruits, vegetables, and nuts can make up a healthy part of your Dachshunds diet as treats, including apples, blueberries, broccoli, carrots, almonds, and cashews.
Before you welcome your new Dachshund into your home, there are several things to consider. First, create a safe space with no objects Dachshunds can chew on or get hurt by. This could include gates to block off rooms or areas, as well as keeping electrical cords out of reach. Additionally, ensure your home has plenty of chew toys, like tennis balls or rubber pellets, to keep your pup entertained and their teeth healthy. It can also be beneficial to sign up for a puppy or dog-training class to teach basic commands and help with other behavioral issues.
Dachshunds typically come in two sizes – the standard size, weighing in at between 16 and 32 pounds, and the miniature size, which typically weighs in at anywhere between 11 and 16 pounds. You can also have what are known as “tweeners”, which weigh in just a bit lighter than the standard size, but heavier than the miniature size. That being said, even a “tweener” size will have different weight ranges, making it a bit of a challenge to determine a “standard” size when buying a Dachshund.
An appropriate amount of daily exercise for a Dachshund is essential to maintain their health and wellbeing. Walking your Dachshund for at least 30 minutes per day can help them stay fit and active. This should include a minimum of 2-3 brisk walks for 15-20 minutes each to help them get the exercise they need. Additionally, playing and social situations with other dogs can help keep them happy. If your Dachshund is older or has health issues, be sure to consult your vet about the amount of exercise that’s best for them.
The answer is a resounding "yes"! Dachshunds are friendly, loyal, and intelligent, making them great family pets. They are small and relatively low-maintenance, but still require plenty of love and attention. They love to be around people, and their friendly nature endeers them to everyone that meets them. Dachshunds are playful and entertaining, making them good for homes with children. They are also generally good with other animals, so they go along well in a household with multiple pets.
The amount of time required to train a Dachshund can vary greatly depending on age, temperament, and the specific commands being taught. Generally speaking, it's a good idea to spend at least 15 minutes a day, either in structured training sessions or a few smaller ones throughout the day, to ensure that your dog is learning and progressing. Of course, regular rewards and positive reinforcement will help to ensure that your pup retains what they have been taught. It's also important to find activities that suit your pup and foster their willingness to learn and interact.
