Questions & Answers
Dachshunds are a unique and versatile breed of small hound dog. They have short legs and a long body, giving them an unusual appearance. Their personalities are quite unique too; they can be reserved but still passionate, alert but also calm, active but also laidback often all at once. Because of their size they are great watchdogs for small dwellings and they don't take up a lot of space. Additionally, they are known for their incredible loyalty to their owners and are quite easy to train.
Dachshunds, like any pet, can potentially cause individuals to experience symptoms of allergies. While there is no definitive answer, it depends largely on the individual's tolerance for pet dander, saliva, dandruff, and other allergens. Additionally, characteristics of the breed such as coat length, breeding, and daily habits can all play a role as to how much of an allergy trigger a Dachshund might be. It is recommended that those with allergies or sensitivities to pet allergens consult with their doctor before bringing a dog of any breed into their home.
Dachshunds are very energetic and have higher calorie needs than some other small breeds. As with many breed-specific nutritional needs, it's important to feed Dachshunds a diet that is formulated for their size and energy levels. Depending on their individual needs, this typically requires a high-quality commercial diet that is specifically designed to meet the needs of Dachshunds, either through a dry mix or wet food with a combination of lean proteins, carbohydrates, and healthy fats.
The best way to become the best possible puppy parent for your Dachshund is to make sure you provide them with a nurturing, secure environment. Consider their health and safety, bring them to the vet for regular checkups, and provide toys and activities to keep them entertained. Also, be sure to feed them a balanced, nutrient-rich diet, and most importantly, spend quality time with your pup. Socialize them with other friendly and healthy dogs. Make sure they are well-groomed, comfortable, and spayed or neutered.
Dachshunds come in two sizes standard and miniature. The standard size Dachshund can weigh anywhere between 16-32 pounds, measures 8-9 inches in height from floor to shoulder, and typically has a body length of around 16-32 inches. The miniature variety are smaller still, weighing in at 11 pounds or under, and standing 5-6 inches high at the shoulder. Miniature Dachshunds also tend to have a body length of between 8-11 inches.
Dachshunds need moderate amounts of exercise, as routinely exercising them helps to keep them healthy and at a healthy weight. Specific levels of exercise will vary depending on the individual dog as well as their age and lifestyle. Generally, a minimum of two 20-minute walks each day, along with playtime, is recommended. An hour or two of exercise each day would be even better. For puppies, shorter, more frequent sessions would be best.
Depending on the individual dog, Dachshunds can typically get along with kids quite well. For those that do, they can often become an inseparable companion for the young family members. Of course, each breed of dog is different, and factors like socialization and training will play a role in how a particular dog reacts around young children. Therefore, it is important that both Dachshunds and kids be trained in proper canine behavior and be under the care of an adult when they are interacting together.
Training a Dachshund requires patience, consistency, and positive reinforcement to be an effective and enjoyable process. Start by familiarizing your pup with basic commands like sit and stay, as this will help establish a proper foundation for further training. Additionally, you will want to be consistent in providing your dog with rewards when they follow commands. Providing both verbal and physical affirmations when they successfully follow commands can help make the process more rewarding for both you and your pup.
