Questions & Answers
Dachshunds are a unique breed of dog that are often referred to as a 'hotdog' or 'wiener' dog. They come in a few different varieties, namely, wirehaired, smooth-haired, and longhaired. Dachshunds are classified as a Hound Group, of the Sporting Breed Group, with the primary purpose of hunting small game such as rabbits and badgers. Often, they have a very strong prey drive and are alert and intelligent. They are also very brave and will protect their family without hesitation.
Managing allergies with Dachshunds can be done by minimizing exposure to potential allergens. Ensure that brushing and bathing are part of their grooming routine. Also, keep them away from areas with high pollen counts, as well as other signs of potential allergens such as hot and humid weather, dust, and pet hair. If possible, vacuum furniture regularly and clean areas that your Dachshunds frequent. Allergies can be managed by also vaccinating against common allergens such as mould and pollen.
Dachshunds are omnivorous dogs that enjoy a well-balanced diet. As with any diet, it's important to ensure that sufficient amounts of proteins, fats, carbohydrates, minerals, and vitamins are included. A healthy diet for Dachshunds should include commercial dry dog food, as well as other fresh foods such as lean meats, boiled chicken, cottage cheese, yogurt, and eggs. Dogs of the Dachshund breed should also be fed ingredients known to be beneficial for joint health such as salmon, sweet potatoes, chia seeds, and green vegetables.
Preparation is key when bringing a new pet into the home. To get ready for a new Dachshund, familiarize yourself with the breed's particular traits and behavior. Spend some time researching diet guidelines. Consider speaking with a qualified vet to determine any specific dietary needs based on your pet's age, weight, and activity level. Have supplies on hand such as a leash and collar, dog beds, toys, and appropriate food and water dishes. As with any breed, it is important to establish a solid routine for feeding, exercise, grooming and playtime.
Dachshunds are small-sized dogs that mature to typically around 8-9 inches in shoulder height, but can range anywhere from 8-11 inches depending on their breed. Generally, males will be on the heavier side at 16-32 pounds, while females are usually lighter at 11-16 pounds. Generally, the weight of a Dachshund usually reflects their size and length, which are essential in the breed's distinct build. Although small, do not be fooled by its size; Dachshunds possess big personalities and can make wonderful, loyal companions!
Dachshunds need appropriate levels of exercise in order to maintain their physical and mental health. Moderate daily exercise, such as a brisk 20-minute walk or a half-hour of off-leash play, is generally sufficient to meet the needs of most Dachshunds. However, energetic breeds may require additional playing, walking or jogging. In addition to formal exercise, playtime with toys, tracking mazes, lure coursing, and interactive food puzzles are all great activities to engage your Dachshund.
Dachshunds can absolutely get along with other pets, provided proper introductions and socialization are done. By introducing the animals gradually in neutral and controlled environments, and allowing them to become accustomed to each other’s presence, many two pet households can be successful. Like all breeds, each individual Dachshund will have a unique personality, so being mindful of how they react to being around other animals is important. Therefore, it’s best for pet owners to take their time, be patient and provide plenty of structure and consistency when interacting with all of their household animals.
The amount of time spent training your Dachshund will vary depending on your goals and the dog's ability to retain information. Generally speaking, it would be beneficial to spend at least 10-15 minutes each day training your Dachshund. This can be a combination of basic obedience commands (such as sit, stay, come, etc...) and specialized commands that are tailored to the Dachshund breed.
