Dachshunds belong to the hound group of dog breeds. These dogs are characterized by their long, low-to-the-ground bodies, short legs, and elongated muzzles. Dachshunds were bred to hunt badger and small animals, and are often described as having a strong prey drive and endurance. The smallest size option is the Kaninchen, which usually stays under 11 pounds as an adult. As puppies, all three varieties tend to be small and sweet.

Dachshunds are prone to injury and can have difficulty covering longer distances without tiring, as they are a comparatively small breed. It may be best to take them on shorter runs, and to allow for plenty of rest between sessions.
