Unfortunately, Dachshunds are not considered to be hypoallergenic. This means that they are, in fact, prone to triggering allergic reactions in certain individuals. The exact cause of these allergies is not known, but they are thought to be caused by the pet's dander (dead skin cells), saliva, or urine. Additionally, Dachshunds usually require regular grooming which can help reduce allergens however, this may not be enough to completely prevent allergic reactions.
Dachshunds should not be fed onions, grapes, garlic, or raisins, as these can be highly toxic to the breed. Other foods to avoid include chocolate, avocado, caffeine, candy, yeast dough, macadamia nuts, alcohol, and cooked bones, as they can all be harmful or even fatal if ingested by a dachshund. You should also avoid feeding your pup too many human foods, as these do not provide balanced nutrition and can contribute to weight gain.
Preparing for your new Dachshund can be a rewarding and exciting experience! Before bringing your new pup home, there are a few steps you should take to ensure you're getting off to a great start. Make sure you have the necessary supplies such as food, bedding, and toys. Dachshunds come in three sizes –standard, miniature, and kaninchen. The standard size is the largest measuring between 16-32 inches tall and weighing up to 32 lbs. The miniature size usually maxes out at 11 lbs and stands no taller than 12 inches. The kaninchen, also known as the rabbit or teacup dachshund, is the smallest size and generally measures no more than 8 inches in height and weighs no more than 7 lbs.
Dachshunds, also known as 'sausage dogs', require daily exercise in order to stay healthy and happy. It's important to provide your dachshund with daily walks and other activities like runs and activities that stimulate their minds. Generally, a minimum of 30 to 40 minutes of moderate exercise per day is recommended for these dogs depending on their size and age. If you have a small dachshund, a few short 10-minute walks throughout the day could be enough, however, larger and active varieties may require more.
